There is a moment, at dusk, when Monsaraz stops being a village and becomes a vision. The medieval walls glow ochre, Lake Alqueva — one of the largest artificial lakes in western Europe, 250 square kilometres of still water — reflects the last glimmers of the day, and the storks on the bell towers stand motionless like heraldic crests. We are in the Alentejo, Portugal's quietest region, just a few kilometres from the Spanish border.

A fortress across millennia

Monsaraz has seen everything pass through: the Romans, the Arabs who called it Saris, the Knights Templar who held it after the Reconquista of 1167, and finally King Dinis I, who in the 14th century added the castle and completed the walls. In the main square today, the Casa da Inquisição survives, its austere arcades telling of centuries of power and fear. The castle is a national monument, and from its wall walk you can embrace three countries: Portugal, Spain, and the endless sky of Extremadura.

The rhythm of the village

Inside the walls, a few dozen people live. The low whitewashed houses with blue or yellow-ochre borders line just two main lanes converging in front of the Igreja de Santiago. There are no traffic lights, no chain stores. There are, however, Alentejo pottery shops, taverns where you eat prato dorado — fried eggs with fried bread, coriander, and garlic, the local comfort food — and cellars where Alentejo red wine costs less than five euros a bottle.

Getting there and when to go

Monsaraz is reached by car from Évora in about 55 kilometres, with no convenient direct bus link. Spring (March–May) is the ideal season: green wheat fields and red poppies turn the plain into a painting. In summer temperatures can exceed 40 degrees, but the starry nights over the lake — Alqueva is an International Dark Sky Reserve — make up for any hardship.
