The falcon-wing staircases of the Rione Sanità: Naples' secret Baroque

In Naples' Rione Sanità, Sanfelice's falcon-wing staircases are theatrical backdrops of the Baroque, still lived in and off the main tourist trails.

A few steps from the Archaeological Museum, beyond the arch that leads into the Rione Sanità, Naples changes rhythm. Here the tourist flows of Spaccanapoli and via San Gregorio Armeno thin out, leaving the narrow alleys, the fruit stalls, the chatter of residents. It is a district long cut off from the city, today reborn thanks to the work of the community cooperatives that manage the nearby catacombs. And it is right here, behind anonymous doorways, that the city's most surprising and hidden Baroque face reveals itself.

The falcon wings

The secret is called the open staircase. On via dei Vergini, at number 19, the Palazzo dello Spagnolo holds in its courtyard a double flight that seems to spread open like a pair of wings. The design, nicknamed "falcon wings", is the signature of the architect Ferdinando Sanfelice, who designed the palace in 1738. It is no ordinary staircase: the crossing galleries, the pale stuccoes, the stacked arches transform the space into a theatrical backdrop, conceived so that the residents' lives would unfold on stage.

The twin courtyards

A short distance away, in the Arena alla Sanità area, the architect also designed his own residence, the Palazzo Sanfelice, with another monumental staircase, more austere but equally scenographic. Two twin courtyards that answer one another in the heart of the district, telling of an idea of Baroque that is intimate, domestic, far from the grandiloquence of the churches in the centre.

Palaces still lived in

It must be said plainly: these are not museums. They are palaces still lived in, where washing hangs across the flights and children play on the steps. Access to the courtyards is generally free during the day, but you enter as a guest, in silence, respecting the privacy of those who live there. No drones, no rowdiness, no intrusive photo shoots: the best way to discover this corner is to move slowly, leaving a small mark only in the neighbourhood's bars and shops.

The Rione Sanità can be explored on foot in half a day, perhaps combined with the San Gennaro catacombs and a stop at a pastry shop. It is worth coming outside the high season, when even here the few visitors cluster together: a midweek morning is the perfect moment to have the courtyards almost all to yourself.
