Naples is almost always told from above: the gulf, Vesuvius, the alleys full of voices. But part of its deepest history rests underground, in the heart of the Rione Sanità. The Catacombs of San Gennaro are a maze of galleries dug into the yellow tufa, where the first Christian communities buried their dead and, later, for a time kept the remains of the city's patron saint. To walk inside is to cross through layers of centuries, in a silence that seems impossible up on the surface.
Frescoes and mosaics
What strikes you is not only the scale of the site, which unfolds over two levels, but the delicacy of the frescoes and mosaics that still survive on the walls and vaults. Faces, symbols, faded colours tell of a spirituality distant and intimate. The visit is led by local guides, often young people from the neighbourhood involved in community projects: choosing this place also means supporting a part of the city that has turned its forgotten heritage into work and redemption.
The Sanità district
Compared with the great attractions of the centre, here the crowds are almost always modest. You enter in groups, you walk without rushing, you listen. It is worth pairing the descent into the catacombs with a walk through the Sanità: its churches, its hidden palaces, its workshops, the staircases that climb towards the Ponte. It is a district that, until not long ago, many avoided and that today welcomes anyone eager for a real Naples.
How to visit
To truly enjoy it, it is best to choose the less touristy months, book in advance and arrive early in the morning. You will leave the Neapolitan sun for an hour, but you will descend into one of the oldest and least told pages of the city.

Getting there
The catacombs lie along the climb of Capodimonte, near the basilica of the Incoronata, above the Rione Sanità. By public transport you can use metro Line 1 and continue with a bus towards Capodimonte, or reach the area on foot from the Sanità stops. By car you follow the bypass to the Capodimonte exit; Naples-Capodichino airport is the reference one.
