The Val d'Agri greenway among parks and olive groves
The Val d'Agri, in Basilicata, is a green valley floor between Lake Pertusillo and the mountains of the Appennino Lucano National Park. An authentic inland Basilicata, made of olive trees and quiet villages, where mass tourism simply does not reach.

The Val d'Agri is one of those places that stay off the postcards. When you think of Basilicata, the Sassi of Matera or the beaches of Metaponto come to mind, but this broad green valley in the heart of the region, crossed by the river Agri, is almost unknown to anyone who does not live there. And yet it is a little paradise for those who love pedalling far from the crowds: a gentle valley floor ringed by mountains, with the great Lake Pertusillo acting as a mirror and the peaks of the Appennino Lucano Val d'Agri Lagonegrese National Park closing off the horizon.
Lake Pertusillo
The heart of the landscape is the Pertusillo reservoir itself, an artificial lake of tranquil waters set among the hills, near Spinoso and Montemurro. Pedalling around it offers continuous glimpses of the water, with the woods sloping down almost to the shores. From here the valley opens out towards villages such as Marsico Nuovo, Marsicovetere, Viggiano with its Marian sanctuary atop the mountain, and Grumento Nova, where you find the important ruins of the ancient Roman city of Grumentum, with its theatre and archaeological area: a stop worth including to grasp how ancient the history of this valley is.
The floor of the Agri valley is the part best suited to a relaxed ride: the terrain is relatively gentle compared with the surrounding mountains, and it winds among fields, olive groves and villages spread across the slopes. You cross authentic farming landscapes, where the olive tree is the protagonist, and you breathe an air of the real Basilicata, made of work in the fields and slow rhythms. For those who want to raise the bar, the roads that climb to the villages on the slopes, such as Viggiano, offer demanding ascents and views from on high over the entire valley and the lake.
Difficulty
In terms of effort, this route is among the most accessible in inland Basilicata if you stick to the valley floor: the surface is mostly paved on low-traffic roads, and the elevation gain stays modest as long as you don't decide to climb up to the hill villages. It is a route well suited even to those not seeking a great challenge, while still being in a mid-mountain setting where the odd rise and fall is never missing. Pedal assist makes everything more within reach, especially for the detours towards the villages.
To get there, the valley is served by the valley-floor road that runs its whole length, and centres such as Villa d'Agri, Marsico Nuovo or Grumento Nova make convenient bases where you can leave the car and set off. From there you move along the valley in one direction or the other, choosing whether to stay low or climb towards the villages.
When to go
The best time runs from spring to late autumn: from May to October the valley is at its finest. In spring the fields are green and the climate mild; in autumn the light turns warm and the olive groves prepare for the harvest. These are months in which this area stays quiet anyway, because the Val d'Agri is not a mass tourist destination in any season: there is no overtourism to avoid here, there is only a valley that lives for itself and that the slow traveller can enjoy almost exclusively.
Practical tips
A practical tip: take the time to stop in the villages and taste the local products, from oil to cheeses, because the true wealth of this valley is its rural authenticity. And if you love history, devote half a day to the archaeological area of Grumentum: leaving the bike and walking among the Roman ruins immersed in greenery is a perfect way to break up the ride. Always carry water and a few snacks, because between one village and the next the stretches without services can be long.
