How to get to Potenza by plane
Potenza does not have its own airport. The nearest airports are:
- **Naples Capodichino (NAP)**: about 170 km (1h45 by car). The most convenient for flight variety. From Naples, direct bus or train via Salerno
- **Bari-Karol Wojtyla (BRI)**: about 150 km (1h45 by car). Connected by FAL bus or train
- **Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi (QSR)**: about 100 km (1h15 by car), a newer airport with expanding routes
- **Lamezia Terme (SUF)**: about 200 km (2h), useful for those coming from Calabria
From all airports, the most practical option is car hire or direct buses to Potenza.
How to get to Potenza by train
Potenza has two main stations:
- **Potenza Centrale**: on the Trenitalia Battipaglia-Potenza-Metaponto line. Intercity and regional trains
- **Potenza Inferiore-Scalo FAL**: terminus of the Ferrovie Appulo-Lucane, for Bari and Matera
Main connections:
- **Naples/Salerno**: via Battipaglia, about 3h by Intercity or fast regional
- **Bari**: by FAL, about 3h30-4h (slow but scenic regional train through the Murge)
- **Taranto/Metaponto**: regional, about 1h30
- **Rome**: no convenient direct connection. Bus or car is better
Potenza Centrale station is in the lower part of the city. The historic centre is up high: reach it via public escalators or buses.

Driving is the most convenient way to reach Potenza:
- **From Naples** (170 km, 1h45): A3/E45 to Sicignano degli Alburni, then the toll-free Potenza-Sicignano motorway link
- **From Salerno** (100 km, 1h15): A2 to Sicignano, then the link road to Potenza
- **From Bari** (150 km, 1h45): A14 to Foggia-Candela or via SS96/SS407 (Basentana) from Matera
- **From Matera** (100 km, 1h15): SS407 Basentana (toll-free expressway)
- **From Rome** (350 km, 3h30): A1 to Sicignano then link road, or A16 from Naples
The Potenza-Sicignano motorway link is the main artery and is toll-free. The city sits at 819 m altitude, the highest regional capital in Italy.
