Gorges de la Truyère: the Secret Canyon of the Cantal
In the wild heart of the Auvergne, the Gorges de la Truyère are green, winding gorges of water, viaducts and silence, in the Cantal.

There are places in France that never make it onto postcards, and the Gorges de la Truyère are one of them. Here, in the department of the Cantal, the river Truyère has spent millennia carving a deep, sinuous groove through basalt plateaus, creating a landscape of wooded slopes, tight bends and dark waters that mirror the Auvergne sky. It is nature both stern and generous, far from the crowded routes of Provence or the Loire.
The best way to discover these gorges is to follow the back roads that rise and fall between the viewpoints. From lookouts such as the one at Mallet, your gaze takes in the river's meanders, now partly turned into hydroelectric reservoirs that have changed their face but not their charm. Further downstream, it's worth seeking out the Garabit viaduct, a nineteenth-century iron railway structure spanning the valley: an imposing piece of architecture suspended above the water, where you'll often find yourself alone to contemplate it.
The beauty of the Truyère is exactly this: no queues, no packed car parks, no lines at the viewpoints. You walk along almost deserted trails, you pass through stone villages where time seems to have slowed, you drink a coffee in small village bistros without rushing. For those who travel responsibly, it's a chance to support fragile local economies and to move without weighing on an already delicate land.
The ideal time is late spring or early autumn, when the woods change colour and temperatures stay mild. You sleep in small inns or rural gîtes, set out early in the morning and let the valley reveal, bend after bend, its secluded character. A destination for those seeking silence, water and sky, and not the next photo already seen a thousand times.
Getting there
The main access point to the gorges is the area around the Garabit viaduct, a few kilometres south of Saint-Flour: it is easily reached by car from the A75 motorway, which has a dedicated rest area, or from the departmental roads that run along the valley. The reference town is Saint-Flour, about fifteen minutes away, while the most convenient airport is Clermont-Ferrand. A scenic road follows the course of the Truyère between dams and viewpoints.
