Day 1 — the Duomo and Filippo Lippi
Prato's Duomo, dedicated to Santo Stefano, holds some of the most important early Florentine Renaissance frescoes, by Filippo Lippi, along with works by Donatello. The façade and the surrounding historic centre, with their distinctive white and local green marble two-tone pattern, tell of an artistic heritage often overshadowed by nearby Florence. It's worth spending the first day on an unhurried stroll between the Duomo, the streets of the medieval centre and, for those interested in the city's industrial past, a few examples of industrial archaeology tied to the textile tradition.
Day 2 — Castello dell'Imperatore
The Castello dell'Imperatore, a Swabian castle built by Frederick II, is an architectural rarity in north-central Italy — fortifications of this type are far more common in southern Italy. The second day lends itself to a slower pace: a visit to the castle, a walk towards Piazza Mercatale, and — for those wanting to move away from the centre — a discovery of the "city of a hundred chimneys", with visible traces of its past as an Italian textile capital.
