Where to Stay in Positano: Costiera Amalfitana Lodgings Between Luxury and Authenticity
Guide on where to stay in Positano: sea-view B&Bs, cliffside hotels, guesthouses in the village, and strategies to keep costs down.
Positano: Living the Costiera Beyond the Postcard
Positano is the pearl of the Amalfi Coast, a cascade of pastel-coloured houses tumbling from the mountain to the sea. Its beauty is celebrated worldwide, but mass tourism risks turning it into a soulless stage. The key to experiencing Positano authentically is choosing where to stay carefully: away from the seafront crowds, in the alleys where residents still hang their laundry and lemons scent the air.
Those who sleep in Positano discover a different town in the early morning and late evening: the deserted beach at dawn, the silent stairways after dinner, the sound of bells from the Church of Santa Maria Assunta echoing between the houses.
Best Areas to Stay
Upper Part (Montepertuso and Nocelle)
The hillside villages above Positano offer spectacular panoramas, more accessible prices, and an authentic village atmosphere. Montepertuso is reachable by bus from the centre, Nocelle is the starting point of the Path of the Gods. Sleeping up here means living the Positano of residents, with local trattorias and genuine shops.
Chiesa Nuova Area
The upper part of the built-up area, along the main road. Convenient for buses and with more accessible parking than the centre. Properties here offer panoramic coastal views and mid-range prices. You need to descend many stairways to reach the beach, but the panorama more than compensates.
Centre and Beach
The area around the Spiaggia Grande and the Church of Santa Maria Assunta is Positano's heart. Lodgings here are the most expensive but offer the convenience of having everything within reach. Perfect for short stays where you want to live the essence of Positano without too many stairways.
Fornillo
Positano's lesser-known beach, reachable by a panoramic walk from the centre. The Fornillo area offers a calmer, more relaxed atmosphere, with properties overlooking a sheltered bay. The right choice for those who want the sea without the Spiaggia Grande crowds.
Types of Accommodation
B&Bs with Panoramic Terraces
Positano's speciality: family-run B&Bs with terraces where breakfast becomes an unforgettable experience. Homemade limoncello, sfogliatelle, fresh fruit, and Neapolitan coffee with views over the sea and the Li Galli Islands. Owners are often fishermen or artisans who know every secret of the coast.
Boutique Hotels
Positano hosts some of the most photographed hotels in the world, with infinity pools overlooking the coast, bougainvillea gardens, and terraces suspended above the sea. Even in mid-range categories you will find properties of great architectural charm, carved into the mountain rock.
Holiday Homes and Apartments
For longer stays, apartments offer independence and the chance to cook with local produce: Amalfi lemons, buffalo mozzarella, piennolo tomatoes. Many have private terraces with sea views.
Budget Tips
- Positano is expensive year-round, but November-March offers significant discounts (up to 60%) and a unique winter charm
- Montepertuso and Nocelle cost 40-60% less than the centre and offer authenticity and better views
- Avoiding weekends and arriving mid-week reduces costs
- Praiano, a few kilometres away, offers the same coast at decidedly lower prices
- Bring comfortable shoes: Positano is all stairs, and taxis are very expensive
Unique Stays
Some properties are carved into natural rock caves, with raw stone walls and windows opening directly onto the Tyrrhenian Sea. In Nocelle, you can sleep at the start of the Path of the Gods and set off at dawn for Campania's most spectacular hike. Some B&Bs in the centre offer the chance to go out on a boat with the fisherman owner to cast nets at dawn and cook the catch for breakfast.
How Long to Stay
Two nights are the minimum to experience Positano without rushing. Three nights allow you to add the Path of the Gods, a day trip by boat along the coast, or a visit to Amalfi and Ravello. With a week you can explore the entire Amalfi Coast using Positano as a base.
