Why Bassano del Grappa deserves more than a day trip

Bassano del Grappa is one of the most fascinating cities in the Veneto, nestled at the foot of Monte Grappa along the Brenta river. The Ponte Vecchio (Bridge of the Alpini), designed by Palladio, is one of Italy's most photographed bridges. The grappa distilleries, artistic ceramics, Piazza Libertà and the Civic Museum make Bassano a perfect destination for a weekend of culture, food and wine, and nature. In summer the Brenta banks come alive, in winter Monte Grappa offers snow-covered landscapes.

Historic centre

The heart of the city stretches between Piazza Libertà, Piazza Garibaldi and the Ponte Vecchio. Historic hotels, B&Bs in Venetian palaces and guesthouses offer a privileged position for experiencing Bassano car-free. The arcaded squares, historic cafes (Nardini on the bridge) and ceramic shops are within easy reach. Prices: 65-110 euros for a double.

Along the Brenta

Properties overlooking the river, just outside the pedestrian centre, offer views of the Brenta and the mountains. Tranquillity and easy parking, 5 minutes' walk from the Ponte Vecchio. Ideal for those arriving by car.

Hills (Marostica, Romano d'Ezzelino)

The hills north of Bassano host farmhouses and B&Bs with Monte Grappa views. Marostica (the chess city) is 7 km away and offers a charming and cheaper alternative. Perfect for combining Bassano with the Pre-Alps.

Industrial area and outskirts

Business hotels with parking and contained prices for those passing through or on work trips. Less characterful but functional. 10 minutes by car from the centre.

Getting around

Bassano's centre is pedestrian and compact. For Monte Grappa, Marostica and the Pre-Alps a car is needed. The railway station is 10 minutes' walk from the centre (trains to Vicenza, Padua, Venice). The Valsugana cycle path starts from the centre towards Trento.
