Vicenza in 2 days: much more than Palladio's city

Vicenza is often reduced to "Palladio's city", but anyone staying two days discovers a far more multifaceted reality: a living city with authentic working-class neighbourhoods, a centuries-old goldsmithing tradition and hills within walking distance that offer unexpected vistas.

Day 1: The Palladian centre and its secrets

Morning

Start from Piazza dei Signori, the city's beating heart. The Basilica Palladiana dominates with its Renaissance loggias: climb to the terrace for a rooftop panorama worth the ticket price. Beside it, the Torre Bissara soars to 82 metres.

Continue along Corso Palladio, the Roman decumanus transformed into an elegant shopping street. Stop at Palazzo Chiericati, now the Civic Museum, a masterpiece of classical proportion housing a gallery with Tiepolo, Tintoretto and Van Dyck.

Afternoon

Reach the Teatro Olimpico, the oldest covered theatre in the world still in use. Scamozzi's perspective stage sets in wood and stucco, simulating the streets of Thebes, are breathtaking. Take your time: this place deserves to be savoured slowly.

Hidden gem: from Contrà Santa Corona, enter the Church of Santa Corona. It holds a Baptism of Christ by Giovanni Bellini and an Adoration of the Magi by Paolo Veronese, in a church tourists often overlook.

Continue to Contrà Porti, where noble palaces line up one more beautiful than the next: Palazzo Barbaran da Porto (home to the Palladio museum), Palazzo Thiene, Palazzo Iseppo Porto.

Evening

Dine in the Porta Nova quarter or the osterias of Contrà Do Rode, trying baccalà alla vicentina, the city's signature dish. The centre comes alive with aperitivo in Piazza delle Erbe.

Day 2: Villas, hills and craftsmanship

Morning

Devote the morning to Villa La Rotonda, just 2 km from the centre (walkable along Viale Risorgimento). This iconic building, copied worldwide, must be seen in person to understand its geometric perfection in the landscape. On Wednesdays and Saturdays the frescoed interiors are also open.

A little further, Villa Valmarana ai Nani deserves a stop for the frescoes by Giambattista and Giandomenico Tiepolo: the father painted heroes and gods in the main building, the son everyday scenes in the guest house. The contrast is illuminating.

Afternoon

Climb to the Sanctuary of Monte Berico for the most beautiful panorama of the city and the plain stretching to the Euganean Hills. The basilica houses a monumental Supper of St Gregory the Great by Veronese.

Hidden gem: from the basilica, take the Colli Berici trail towards Arcugnano. In twenty minutes of walking through vineyards and rural villas you'll reach the Valle del Silenzio, a natural amphitheatre where time has stopped.

Evening

For your last evening, explore the Borgo Berga quarter or the osterias along Contrà Pescherie Vecchie. If in season, don't miss bigoli con l'arna (duck ragù) paired with Tai Rosso from the Berici Hills.
