What to see in Salerno in 2 days

Salerno is the gateway to the Amalfi Coast that nobody stops to explore. A serious mistake: the city of the Lombards and Europe's first medical school holds a layered medieval centre, a spectacular seafront, and a position overlooking the gulf like a natural amphitheatre. Two days reveal a city worth the trip in itself.

Day 1: The medieval centre and the Cathedral

Morning (3-4 hours)

Start on Via dei Mercanti, the covered medieval artery crossing the ancient heart from east to west. Every palace here hides a courtyard, an arch or an artisan workshop. The Arch of Arechi, an 8th-century Lombard passage, marks the entrance to the oldest quarter.

Reach the Cathedral of San Matteo, founded by Robert Guiscard in 1076. The quadriporticus with Roman spolia columns is one of southern Italy's finest. Inside, the apse mosaics rival those of Monreale, and the Baroque Crypt holds the relics of the evangelist Matthew. Don't miss the atrium with reused Roman sarcophagi.

Afternoon (3-4 hours)

Devote the afternoon to the Minerva Garden, Europe's first botanical garden (1300), created by the Salerno Medical School to cultivate medicinal plants. Arranged on terraces overlooking the gulf, it still preserves its medieval water system. The view from the upper terrace is extraordinary.

Continue into the Alto quarter, the most authentic part of the centre with houses climbing toward the castle. The medieval Aqueduct (9th century), with arches spanning Via Arce, is one of the city's most unusual monuments.

Evening

Stroll along Lungomare Trieste, considered Italy's most beautiful: a kilometre and a half of palms, gardens and gulf views from Capo d'Orso to the Coast. Dinner in the Barbuti quarter, the lanes behind Via Roma with fishermen's trattorias.

Day 2: Arechi Castle and modern Salerno

Morning (3-4 hours)

Climb to Arechi Castle (bus or car, 10 minutes from the centre), the Lombard fortress at 300 metres commanding the entire city and gulf. The panorama is among Campania's most spectacular: you can see Capri, the Sorrentine peninsula and the full Coast. The museum displays Lombard ceramics and coins.

Descend on foot via the Sentiero dei Principi, an ancient path through the Canalone pine forest (45 minutes, panoramic).

Afternoon (3-4 hours)

Visit the Diocesan Museum in the Archbishop's Palace, housing the 11th-century Salerno ivories: 67 carved panels telling biblical stories with extraordinary finesse. Little known, they rank among the masterpieces of medieval European art.

Explore the Santa Sofia Complex, a Lombard church with 8th-century frescoes recently discovered beneath plaster. Then walk along the marina to Zaha Hadid's Maritime Station (2016), the concrete "oyster" that has become a new city landmark.

Evening

Aperitivo in Piazza della Libertà, the new seaside square with its dramatic fountain. Seafood dinner in the Fornelle quarter, the fishermen's neighbourhood below the Cathedral where the city's popular soul survives.
