How to get to Salerno
Salerno is the ideal gateway to the Amalfi Coast and Cilento, a lively port city with an elegant seafront and a historic centre steeped in history. Well served by high-speed rail and with a growing airport, Salerno deserves a visit not merely as a transit stop.
By train
**Salerno station** is a major railway hub on the **Naples-Reggio Calabria** line, also served by **high-speed trains**. From **Rome Termini** the Frecciarossa takes about 2 hours, with numerous daily services. From **Naples Centrale**, regional trains depart every 15-20 minutes taking about 35-45 minutes; the Frecciarossa takes just 25 minutes.
From **Milan Centrale** the direct Frecciarossa arrives in about 4 hours 30 minutes. From **Florence** you arrive in about 3 hours by Frecciarossa. From **Bari**, Intercity trains take about 3 hours 30 minutes.
The station is on the Lungomare Trieste, steps from the old town and the Maritime Station for ferries.
Local tip
Frecciarossa tickets from Naples to Salerno can cost less than 10 euros when booked in advance: a bargain for the speed of the connection. Note that Salerno station has a sea-side exit (lungomare) and a city-side exit (Via Velia).
By car
Salerno is reached via the **A3 Naples-Salerno-Reggio Calabria motorway**, exit **Salerno Centro** or **Salerno-Pontecagnano** (for the Cilento coast or the airport). From Naples it is about 55 km (40 minutes), from Rome about 270 km (2 hours 40 minutes) via the A1 and A30.
From Bari, take the **A16 Naples-Canosa** to the A3 junction, about 260 km in 3 hours. From the north, a scenic alternative is to exit at Cava de' Tirreni and descend via the state road.
Parking
The **Torrione car park** (multi-storey, near the centre) is the most convenient, about 1.50 euros/hour. **Vinciprova car park** on the seafront has similar rates. For longer stays, the **Maritime Station car park** offers good daily rates. Blue-line spaces on the seafront cost about 2 euros/hour.
By plane
**Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi Airport** (QSR) at Pontecagnano Faiano is about 15 km from the centre and is rapidly expanding its connections following its reopening with new domestic and international flights. A shuttle bus connects the airport to the railway station in about 30 minutes.
**Naples Capodichino Airport** (NAP) is about 60 km away and is southern Italy's main hub, with flights across Europe and intercontinental services. From Capodichino, the **Alibus** reaches Naples Centrale in 15 minutes, from where you take the train to Salerno.
Local tip
If you arrive at Capodichino, consider a direct transfer to Salerno: several companies offer shared services for about 20-25 euros, saving the double transfer via central Naples.
