How to get to Amalfi: train, car, plane and bus

How to get to Amalfi

Reaching Amalfi requires some planning, as this jewel of the Amalfi Coast has no train station of its own and no airport in the immediate vicinity. Yet this relative isolation adds to the charm of a place reached via one of the world's most beautiful coastal roads. Here are all the options for getting there in the best possible way.

By train

The nearest railway station to Amalfi is **Salerno**, served by Trenitalia and Italo high-speed trains from Rome (about 2 hours), Naples (35 minutes by Frecciarossa) and Milan (4 hours 30 minutes). From Salerno you continue by ferry or SITA bus.

An alternative is **Vietri sul Mare** station on the Salerno-Cava de' Tirreni regional line, but connections are less frequent and you still need a bus to complete the journey.

From **Naples Centrale** you can also take the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento and from there catch a ferry to Amalfi — a longer but very scenic route.

Local tip

Book trains in advance, especially in summer. Regional trains between Salerno and Naples are often crowded: choose high-speed services if your budget allows.

By car

From the north, take the **A3 Naples-Salerno motorway**, exit at **Vietri sul Mare**, then follow the **SS163 Amalfitana** towards Amalfi. From the south, the exit is also Vietri sul Mare, or alternatively you can approach from Salerno.

The SS163 is spectacular but narrow and winding: summer traffic can be intense, with frequent queues especially on Saturdays and Sundays. Avoid peak hours (10am-1pm and 4-7pm) and note that some sections have alternating one-way traffic.

Parking

Parking in Amalfi is the biggest challenge. The **Luna Rossa car park** (covered, about 5 euros/hour) is the most central. The **Flavio Gioia car park** on the main road is cheaper. In high season, consider leaving your car in Salerno or Maiori and continuing by public transport.

By plane

The nearest airport is **Naples Capodichino** (about 65 km), with domestic and international flights. From Capodichino, reach Amalfi in about 2 hours by combining the **Alibus** to Naples Centrale or the Maritime Station, then train or ferry.

**Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi Airport** at Pontecagnano is closer (about 40 km) and is expanding its connections. A taxi or private transfer from here takes about 50 minutes.

Recommended transfers

Private transfers from Naples to Amalfi cost about 100-130 euros and are convenient when travelling in a group. Several local companies offer door-to-door service.

By bus

**SITA Sud** buses connect Salerno to Amalfi with frequent services (about every 30-60 minutes). The journey takes about 75 minutes and passes through all the coastal towns. The Amalfi stop is in **Piazza Flavio Gioia**, on the seafront.

From Naples, **FlixBus** and other companies offer seasonal direct connections. From Sorrento, SITA buses travel the coast in the opposite direction.

Local tip

SITA tickets can be bought at tobacconists or on the **UniCoCampania** app. In summer buses are very crowded: board at early stops to get a seat and enjoy the panoramic views.

By ferry

From April to October, ferries are the most beautiful way to reach Amalfi. **TravelMar** and **Alicost** connect Salerno to Amalfi in about 35 minutes, stopping at Minori and Maiori. From Naples (Molo Beverello), **NLG** and **Alilauro** hydrofoils take about 70 minutes.

Ferries from Positano to Amalfi take just 25 minutes and offer an unforgettable view of the coast from the sea.

Local transport

Amalfi is small and easily explored on foot. To reach Ravello, take the SITA bus (15 minutes) or walk up the historic stairway. Local taxis have fixed rates for main destinations.

Water taxis connect Amalfi to more secluded beaches such as Ieranto Bay and Duoglio.
