What to see in Castelluccio di Norcia in 2 days

Castelluccio di Norcia is a unique place in Italy. At 1452 metres above sea level, this tiny village overlooks the Pian Grande, a vast karst plateau surrounded by the Sibillini Mountains. Famous for the spectacular lentil bloom between June and July, Castelluccio offers extraordinary experiences in every season. After the 2016 earthquake the village is slowly reborn, and visiting today means supporting a resilient community.

Day 1: the Pian Grande and the village

The Pian Grande

The Pian Grande is a plateau of about 15 km² at 1300 metres, one of the largest in Europe. The landscape is mesmerising: a sea of grass surrounded by mountains in every direction. In winter snow transforms it into a white expanse, in spring wildflowers colour it, and between late June and mid-July the lentil bloom creates a mosaic of colours that attracts photographers from around the world.

The bloom

The famous "fiorita" is an unpredictable natural event depending on spring rains and temperature. Lentil fields are painted red (poppies), blue (cornflowers), yellow (rapeseed) and white (daisies) in a patchwork that changes every year. The best period is from the last week of June to the second week of July. Arrive at dawn to avoid crowds and enjoy the best light.

The village

Castelluccio has fewer than 150 inhabitants. The 2016 earthquake severely damaged the houses, and reconstruction is still underway. The centre is partly accessible, with some commercial facilities in temporary modules. The atmosphere is that of a place suspended between past and future, with a community that never abandoned its land.

Sunset over the plateau

Sunset seen from Castelluccio is unforgettable. The raking light sets the plateau's colours ablaze and draws long shadows on the mountains. Forca di Presta, the pass connecting the Pian Grande with Arquata del Tronto, offers an exceptional viewpoint.

Day 2: hikes in the Sibillini

Monte Vettore

The ascent of Monte Vettore (2476 m), the highest peak in the Sibillini, starts from Forca di Presta. The trail is well marked and presents no technical difficulty, but requires about 4-5 hours return. Lago di Pilato, a glacial lake at 1940 m, is a possible detour but adds 2 hours.

Mietitori Trail

For a shorter hike, the Mietitori Trail crosses the Pian Piccolo and Pian Perduto, two smaller plateaus with landscapes similar to the Pian Grande but without the crowds. About 3 hours as a loop, easy.

Norcia

30 minutes by car, Norcia deserves a visit for Piazza San Benedetto, the artisan delicatessens (black truffle and lentils are the signature products) and food shops. Post-earthquake reconstruction is underway here too.

Free flight

The Pian Grande is one of Italy's best free-flight sites. Paragliders and hang-gliders launch from the summit of Monte Vettore and land on the plateau. Tandem flights with local instructors are available: a unique way to see the bloom from above.

Practical tips

  • The bloom is unpredictable: check social media and local sites before going
  • In summer bring sunscreen and water: there is no shade on the plateau
  • In winter roads can be icy or closed: snow chains are mandatory
  • The village has limited services: bring food and water, especially off-season
  • Castelluccio IGP lentils can be bought directly from producers
  • The night sky is among the darkest in Italy: perfect for stargazing
