How to get to Castelluccio di Norcia: car, bus and tips for the plateau

How to get to Castelluccio di Norcia

Castelluccio di Norcia sits at 1452 metres above sea level in the heart of the Sibillini Mountains, in the province of Perugia. Its isolated position is part of its charm, but reaching the plateau requires planning, especially in winter.

By car

A car is practically essential to reach Castelluccio.

From Norcia

The most direct road climbs from Norcia (18 km, about 30 minutes). The route is scenic and well surfaced, with bends and switchbacks offering progressive views of the plateau. In winter it can be icy: snow chains or winter tyres are mandatory from November to March.

From Spoleto and the E45

From the E45 (Perugia-Terni), exit Spoleto Nord. Follow the Valnerina to Norcia, then climb to Castelluccio. Total about 1 hour 30 minutes.

From Ascoli Piceno and the A14

From the A14 Adriatic motorway, exit San Benedetto del Tronto or Ascoli Piceno. Head up towards Arquata del Tronto and Forca di Presta, from where you descend onto the Pian Grande. About 1 hour 30 minutes. Note: after the 2016 earthquake some roads may have restrictions.

From Rome

A1 to Orte, then E45 towards Spoleto, Valnerina and Norcia. About 2 hours 30 minutes in normal conditions.

From Perugia

E45 towards Spoleto, then Valnerina and Norcia. About 1 hour 30 minutes.

Parking

During the bloom (June-July) parking is regulated. Free shuttles run from car parks below. Off-season you park freely in the village.

By bus

Bus connections are very limited. The Spoleto-Norcia line (Busitalia) runs a few services daily. From Norcia to Castelluccio there is no regular service. During the bloom, special shuttles are activated.

By train

The nearest railway station is Spoleto, on the Rome-Ancona line. From Spoleto bus to Norcia (about 1 hour), then car or shuttle to Castelluccio.

By air

Perugia Sant'Egidio Airport

The closest, about 100 km away. Ryanair flights from some Italian and European cities. Car hire at the airport.

Rome Fiumicino Airport

About 200 km. The most popular connection. From Rome by car via A1 and E45.

Seasonal tips

  • **Winter (December-March)**: the road from Norcia may be closed due to snow. Always check conditions before setting off. Snow chains mandatory.
  • **Bloom (June-July)**: arrive very early (before 8 am) to avoid traffic and find parking. On peak bloom weekends the road is closed and access is by shuttle only.
  • **Autumn and spring**: ideal period for stress-free travel. Clear roads, ample parking, mild climate at lower altitudes.
  • **In every season**: fill up with petrol in Norcia. There are no petrol stations on the plateau.
