What to see in Aosta in 2 days
2-day itinerary in Aosta: the Rome of the Alps among Roman arches, medieval crypts, Valdostan markets and views of Mont Blanc and Gran Paradiso.
Why visit Aosta in 2 days
Aosta is a unique city in Italy: a concentration of imperial Rome set among Europe's highest mountains. The Arch of Augustus, the Roman Theater, the intact city walls coexist with a bilingual Alpine culture (Italian and French) reflected in gastronomy, markets, and daily life. Two days allow you to explore the Roman heritage, medieval spirituality, and the flavors of Valdostan mountain cuisine.
Day 1: Roman and Medieval Aosta
Morning (9:00 - 13:00)
Start from the **Arch of Augustus** (25 BC), the triumphal gate welcoming visitors from the east. A few steps away you'll find the **Roman Bridge** over the Buthier (still in use) and the **Porta Praetoria**, the double entrance gate with three original arches.
Continue inside the walls to the **Roman Theater**: the 22-meter-high south facade is impressive (30-minute visit). Next door, the **Forensic Cryptoporticus** (underground, 20 minutes) is a covered double corridor that ran beneath the forum: atmospheric and cool even in summer.
Then reach the **Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta**: the exterior is modest but the interior conceals Ottonian frescoes in the attic, 12th-century floor mosaics, and the **Treasury Museum** in the sacristy (total time: 45 minutes). Adjacent, the **Cloister of Sant'Orso** with its 40 sculpted capitals is a Romanesque masterpiece not to be missed (30 minutes).
Afternoon (14:30 - 18:00)
Dedicate the afternoon to the **Collegiate Church of Sant'Orso**: the church, the crypt with repurposed Roman columns, and the bell tower dominating the street. Then walk along **Via Sant'Orso** and **Via de Tillier**, the commercial heart, to **Piazza Chanoux**, Aosta's living room with its neoclassical town hall.
If archaeology interests you, the **MAR - Regional Archaeological Museum** (1 hour) collects artifacts from prehistory to the early Middle Ages. Alternatively, climb the **Torre dei Balivi** for views over walls and rooftops.
Evening
Aperitivo in Piazza Chanoux with a glass of Blanc de Morgex (high-altitude white wine). Typical dinner: Valdostan fondue, carbonade (red wine stew), polenta concia. Look for restaurants in the Via Aubert area.
Day 2: Castles, Panoramas and Flavors
Morning (9:00 - 12:30)
Leave the city to visit **Fénis Castle** (20 minutes by car or bus), the most scenic in the Aosta Valley: crenelated towers, frescoed courtyard, furnished interiors (guided tour 1 hour). If you prefer staying closer, **Sarre Castle** (10 minutes) offers a collection of Savoy royal hunting trophies.
Returning to town, stop at the **Regional Nursery** in Sarre for a walk among Alpine plants, or walk the path from the north walls to **Signayes hill** (30 minutes, views over the entire Aosta basin with Monte Emilius in the background).
Afternoon (14:30 - 17:30)
Back in the center, explore the **northern Roman walls area** (Via Carrel): here Roman towers are embedded in medieval houses, creating a unique urban landscape. Seek out the **Tour Fromage** (medieval tower hosting photography exhibitions) and the **Tour du Lépreux**.
Finish with a visit to artisan shops: cheeses (Fontina DOP), cured meats (mocetta, lard d'Arnad), mountain honey. The covered market in Piazza Cavalieri di Vittorio Veneto is the right spot.
Evening
Last Aosta dinner: seuppa valpellinentze (cabbage and Fontina soup), Valdostan cutlet, genepy as digestif. The Via Porta Praetoria area has restaurants with intimate atmosphere.
