You reach Venzone by climbing the Tagliamento valley, where the Julian Alps begin to close in around the river. It is a small village, enclosed by a medieval ring of walls that shields it from the traffic of the main road and the nearby motorway. Those who arrive find themselves before fortified gates, an intimate square and a cathedral that dominates the centre: everything looks ancient, and much of it is, even if its recent history tells a different story.
The rebirth
The 1976 earthquake struck this part of Friuli hard, and Venzone suffered severe damage. The inhabitants chose not to build a new town elsewhere, but to piece the village back together by recovering the fallen stones, numbering them and putting them back in their place. This reconstruction work, which lasted years, has made Venzone a rare case: a historic centre authentic in its materials and forms, yet the fruit of a tenacious collective memory. Walking through the lanes means passing through a community that chose to stay and to begin again.
What to see
Unlike better-known Friulian destinations, here you will find no queues or lines of coaches. It can be visited on foot in a few hours: the walls, the gates, the cathedral, the grey stone houses. In the surroundings, paths open out towards the Tagliamento, one of the last great free-flowing rivers in Europe, with pale gravel beds and clear waters. Lavender, grown in the nearby fields, scents the village at the start of summer.
When to go
To enjoy Venzone without the crowds, it is best to avoid the July and August weekends and the days of the pumpkin festival in autumn. Spring and early summer, or the weeks of September, bring good light, mild temperatures and almost empty streets. It is a stop that rewards those who seek slowness and real stories rather than postcards.
