Valparaíso's Cerros: Where Street Art Turned Every Alley into a Gallery
Century-old wooden funiculars, murals on every wall, cafés in containers and poetry in the alleys: Valparaíso is Chile discovered by climbing.

Valparaíso is a port city built across 42 hills (cerros) overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Neruda loved it and lived here — his house La Sebastiana is now a museum — but Valparaíso's charm lies not in its monuments: it lives in the city's very fabric, in the murals covering every wall, in the alleys that climb without logic, in the century-old wooden funiculars that connect the flatlands to the hilltops.
The cerros to explore
Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción are the best known: colourful streets, cafés with a view, boutique hotels in Victorian houses. But Cerro Polanco — reached by a funicular that travels through the heart of the hill inside a tunnel — feels more authentic. Cerro Bellavista is home to the Museo a Cielo Abierto: twenty murals by Chilean artists painted on the walls of public housing buildings.
The historic funiculars
Of the 30 funicular elevators built between 1883 and 1916, around fifteen are still in operation. The Ascensor Artillería, Ascensor Reina Victoria and Ascensor El Peral are the most scenic — wooden cabins that climb almost vertically for just a few cents, offering a different view of the bay with every ride.
The port and nightlife
The Plan (the lower flat district) is the commercial and port centre. Plaza Sotomayor, the fish market and the Prat pier are the main landmarks. In the evenings, the bars of the cerros come alive — Valparaíso has a vibrant music scene, with jazz, cumbia and Chilean rock spilling out of small venues on the hillsides.
Practical information
From Santiago: bus (1.5 hours) or SCR (suburban train). Valparaíso is chaotic, authentic and at times unsafe — keep valuables safe in the more outlying cerros and move in groups after dark. Best time to visit: October–March (austral summer). Avoid the camanchaca fog season (May–August).
