Fez Medina: The World's Largest Labyrinth That Marrakech Makes You Forget
Nine thousand alleys, medieval tanneries, artisan workshops and no motor vehicles: Fez's medina is the authentic Morocco that Marrakech has stopped being.

Fez el-Bali is the largest medina in the Arab world and one of the oldest — founded in 789 AD. With its 9,000 alleys, 350 mosques, the world's oldest university (the Qarawiyyin, founded in 859) and an urban fabric that has not substantially changed since the 14th century, it is a living organism unlike anything else on earth.
The tanneries
The Chouara tanneries are the symbol of Fez: circular vats filled with natural dyes — saffron yellow, poppy red, indigo blue — where hides are worked by hand as they have been for a thousand years. They are observed from the terraces of the leather shops surrounding the vats (beware: the shopkeepers will try to sell you something). The sprig of mint you are offered at the entrance is not a courtesy — it is to mask the smell.
Getting lost is the plan
Fez's medina has no map that makes sense. The alleys change names at every turn, the signs are contradictory, GPS fails. But getting lost is exactly the right way to experience it: you end up before a communal bakery where bread emerges steaming, in a fondouk (caravanserai) where craftsmen work copper, in a medersa (Koranic school) decorated with stucco, zellige and cedar wood — the Bou Inania and the Attarine are among the finest in the Islamic world.
The comparison with Marrakech
Marrakech has become a brand — luxury riads, influencers, the Gueliz district with its French-style cafés. Fez remains a Moroccan city: chaotic, authentic, making no concessions to international tourism. The food is better (Fez's pastilla is the most refined dish in Moroccan cuisine), the prices are lower, the pressure from vendors is less.
Practical information
Direct flights from several European cities to Fez-Saiss airport. Riads in the medina start from 30 euros. A local guide for a half-day costs 200–300 dirhams and is strongly recommended for the first day. Best time: March–May and September–November. Summer is scorching (40°C+).
