San Pietro in Valle: the Lombard abbey in the woods of Ferentillo

In the woods of the Valnerina, above Ferentillo, an ancient Lombard abbey guards frescoes and quiet far from Umbria's tourist trail.

When you think of the Umbria of parish churches and monasteries, your mind almost always turns to Assisi, to Orvieto or to the orderly queues outside the Basilica of San Francesco. A few kilometres further south, however, the Valnerina slips away through wooded gorges and villages clinging to the rock, and here the noise gives way to the murmur of the river Nera. Ferentillo, with its two hamlets divided by the water and dominated by medieval towers, is the discreet gateway to this secluded world.

Just outside the village, in a fold of the valley surrounded by holm oaks and olive trees, stands the Abbey of San Pietro in Valle. It is a monastic complex of early-medieval origin, tied to the Lombard presence in the Duchy of Spoleto, which preserves the intimate air of places born for retreat and prayer. The church holds cycles of frescoes and stone sarcophagi that recount centuries of comings and goings, while the cloister faces the mountain as it did a thousand years ago. There are no crowded ticket offices, no parked coaches: often you walk in near-total silence.

The beauty of this corner lies precisely in its human scale. You arrive without rushing, leave the car and climb on foot among the terraces, sit on a low wall to watch the valley open out. It is worth combining the visit with a walk along the Nera, perhaps as far as Ferentillo to discover the village and its local museum, and then pushing on towards the waterfalls and the trails that cross the woods.

To truly experience it in solitude, choose the off-season months, away from long weekends and summer holidays. Bring comfortable shoes, water and the desire to slow down: here the value lies not in a monument to tick off, but in the slow time you manage to give yourself.
