Day 1: The Old Town on Water

Begin at **Trepponti**, the monumental five-stairway bridge that is Comacchio's symbol. Built in 1634, it connects three canals and is the perfect photo spot to start. From here, walk along the **Canal Maggiore** northward: colorful houses reflect in the water and flat fishing boats bob lazily.
Reach the **Manifattura dei Marinati** (45-minute visit), the ancient factory for processing marinated eel. The traditional production cycle is explained through panels and videos: you'll understand why eel remains the city's gastronomic symbol.
Then move to the **Loggia dei Mercanti del Grano** and the **Museo Delta Antico** (1 hour), housed in the former Hospital: here the Roman ship of Comacchio is displayed, a 1st-century commercial cargo found intact in the valleys.
Afternoon (15:00 - 18:30)
Stroll along the **minor canals**: Via Cavour, Via Agatopisto, the Ponte degli Sbirri (from which you can see the old prison), the Ponte del Carmine. This loop of about 2 km touches the most photogenic corners.
Visit the **Cathedral of San Cassiano** (brief stop) and then find the **Clock Tower** in Piazza XX Settembre, the city's living room. If you have time, the **Contemporary Art Museum** in Palazzo Bellini offers rotating exhibitions.

Here you can take a **boat excursion** (1.5-2 hours) among the fishing huts, the lavorieri (eel traps), and the water expanses where hundreds of pink flamingos gather.
Alternative: the cycling/walking path along the **Argine dei Casoni** (4 km one way, flat) allows you to spot herons, black-winged stilts, and avocets. Bring binoculars.
Afternoon (14:30 - 18:00)
Reach the **Lidi di Comacchio** (Lido degli Estensi or Lido di Spina, 7 km) for an afternoon of sea and pine forest. Alternatively, visit the **Abbey of Pomposa** (20 km, 1-hour visit): a Romanesque-Byzantine masterpiece with floor mosaics and a 48-meter bell tower visible for miles across the plain.
If you prefer staying nearby, the **Museo delle Valli** at Stazione Foce deepens your understanding of the Delta's unique ecosystem.
Evening
Last evening in town: stroll on the Trepponti at sunset, then aperitivo in Piazza XX Settembre. Try the coppia ferrarese (local bread) with regional cured meats.
