Choosing the Right Season: When Every Place Shows Its True Self
There's no wrong season — only wrong expectations. How to match destination and timing for a journey free of disappointment.

The most common mistake in planning a trip is choosing dates based on when you have time off rather than on the destination itself. The result is predictable: summer crowds in coastal borghi, cold and rain in mountain villages in November, disappointment.
Every place has its ideal season, and it's often not the one you'd expect. The borghi of the Apennine interior are at their best in spring (April–May) and early autumn (September–October): mild temperatures, vivid colours, perfect light. In summer they can be swelteringly hot; in winter, eerily deserted.
The Italian coast out of season is a revelation. September and October in the south: the sea is still warm, the beaches are empty, prices drop sharply. Puglia in October is a dream — silver-leaved olive groves, the grape harvest, a clear blue sky. Liguria in March: blossoms, mimosa, clean water.
The mountains have two perfect windows: June (snowfields melting, meadows in bloom, mountain huts reopening) and September (autumn colours, cool temperatures, silent trails). July and August are lovely but crowded on the most popular paths. Winter belongs to skiers — but also to those who love Alpine borghi under snow.
Art cities follow their own logic. Rome and Florence in winter: fewer tourists, museums you can actually visit without queuing, accommodation at its cheapest. Venice in November: the mist, the golden light, the city giving itself back to Venetians. Naples in March: the first warm days, the seafront promenade walkable again, the historic centre lively without being suffocating.
For travel elsewhere in Europe, shoulder seasons are always the best choice. Prague in April, Lisbon in October, the Greek islands at the end of September. Prices are lower, the weather is often better than in high summer (less extreme heat), and the experience is incomparably more enjoyable.
Some destinations have secret seasons. Sardinia in February for the Mamoiada Carnival. Le Langhe in October for the truffle harvest and the colours of the vineyards. Sicily in February for the almond blossom in the Valle dei Templi. These are moments that few people know about, and they transform an ordinary trip into a singular experience.
Weather isn't everything. The right season also depends on what you're looking for. If you want solitude, travel in low season. If you want village life and local festivals, go in summer. If you want to photograph, seek the light of the shoulder months. If you want to walk, avoid the full heat of summer and the depths of winter.
The practical advice: first choose the destination, then find its best season. Not the other way around. A trip planned in reverse — "I have time off in August, where should I go?" — almost always leads to compromise. A trip planned the right way — "I want to see Umbria, when is it best?" — almost always leads to wonder.
