Why Ragusa is the hidden gem of Val di Noto

Ragusa is actually two cities in one: Ragusa Ibla, the Baroque historic center nestled at the bottom of a valley, and Ragusa Superiore, the new city perched on the plateau above. Both are UNESCO World Heritage, but Ibla is the jewel that takes your breath away. Less crowded than Noto and Modica, Ragusa offers an authenticity that elsewhere is being lost.

Best areas to stay

Ragusa Ibla

The Baroque heart, with the Duomo of San Giorgio dominating the scene. Limestone alleys, noble palaces with sculpted balconies, hanging gardens. In the evening it lights up like a nativity scene. It is the most fascinating area but also the least convenient: narrow streets, nearly impossible parking, many stairs. Perfect for those wanting total immersion.

Ragusa Superiore

The upper city, more modern and functional. The Cathedral of San Giovanni, the Old Bridge (dei Cappuccini) with its view of Ibla, shops along Corso Italia. Easier for cars, with slightly lower prices. Connected to Ibla by a 300-step staircase or shuttle bus.

Marina di Ragusa

25 km from the center, the most beautiful waterfront in the Ragusa area. Fine sand beaches, seafood restaurants, lively summer life. Ideal for families wanting to combine sea and culture. In winter, many properties close.

Iblea countryside and masserie

The landscape around Ragusa is made of dry stone walls, carob trees, olive groves, and fortified masserie. 10-20 minutes from the center, rural properties offer an authentic experience: oil production, cheeses (ragusano DOP), peasant cooking. A car is needed.

Modica and Scicli (surroundings)

15-20 minutes from Ragusa, the sister cities of Val di Noto offer fascinating alternatives. Modica with its chocolate and urban canyons, Scicli with Inspector Montalbano filming locations. Perfect as a base for exploring the entire area.

B&Bs in Baroque palaces

The specialty of Ragusa Ibla. Rooms in 18th-century palazzi rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake, with pietra pece floors (local black stone), balconies with sculpted corbels, and breathtaking views. Prices: 70-120 euros for a double.

Masserie

The ancient fortified farmhouses of the Iblea countryside have been transformed into charming accommodation. Pool among olive trees, breakfast with fresh ricotta and carob honey, absolute silence. The most authentic Ragusa experience.

Boutique hotels

Few but refined, especially in Ibla. Former convents and noble palazzi transformed into small hotels with spa, gourmet restaurant, and panoramic terraces.

Vacation rentals

Many houses in Ibla's historic center have been restored and rented as independent vacation homes. Ideal for families or small groups wanting to live the neighborhood from within.
