What to see in Modica in 2 days

Modica is a city that reveals itself vertically: built across two canyons (the Hyblaean cave valleys), it layers history from the Neolithic to the Baroque in a breathtaking urban landscape. A UNESCO site since 2002, it is less visited than Ragusa and Noto but perhaps more authentic, with its Aztec-tradition chocolate and cave quarters still inhabited.

Day 1: Modica Bassa and the Baroque

Morning (3-4 hours)

Start at the Duomo di San Giorgio, a Sicilian Baroque masterpiece closing the perspective of a monumental 250-step staircase. The tower facade, 62 metres high across five orders, is considered the most scenic in eastern Sicily. Inside you find a Bernardino Niger polyptych (1573) and a floor sundial.

Descend along Corso Umberto I, Modica Bassa's main street created by covering the ancient stream. Every palace along the corso tells a story: note the Baroque brackets with grotesque masks, the pot-bellied wrought-iron balconies, and the Modica chocolate workshops.

Visit the Church of San Pietro, the other cathedral, with its staircase flanked by statues of the 12 apostles. The interior is more austere but the maiolica floor is a jewel.

Afternoon (3-4 hours)

Devote the afternoon to the Cartellone quarter, Modica Bassa's cave district where houses are carved from limestone rock. Daily life here took place in cave-dwellings until the 1950s. Some are open as house-museums.

Continue to the Chocolate Museum in the former Mercedarian Convent. Modica chocolate is unique: cold-worked using the Aztec technique brought by the Spanish in the 16th century, it has an unmistakable granular texture. In the corso's workshops you can watch the production process.

Evening

Dinner at one of the Corso Umberto trattorias, then an evening walk when illuminated churches create theatrical scenography between the canyons. The Piazza Matteotti belvedere offers the most evocative night view of San Giorgio.

Day 2: Modica Alta and surroundings

Morning (3-4 hours)

Climb to Modica Alta (stairs or shuttle) to visit the Castello dei Conti, the medieval fortress atop the cliff that once dominated the entire county. The clock tower remains, along with the cave church of San Cataldo, carved from rock with Byzantine frescoes.

Walk along Via Grimaldi, the panoramic road connecting the two upper parts of the city. From here you get the most complete view of the urban canyon: houses clinging to rock walls create a unique vertiginous effect. The Church of Santa Maria di Betlem, with its 16th-century terracotta nativity scene, is often deserted.

Afternoon (3-4 hours)

Descend to underground Modica: beneath the main corso exists a system of medieval canals and cisterns visitable with local guides (book at the Tourist Information Point). These underground spaces served for water collection and shelter.

If time allows, reach Cava d'Ispica (8 km), a 13-km canyon with prehistoric necropolises, early Christian catacombs and cave churches. The Cava d'Ispica Parco Forza section is the most accessible and least crowded.

Evening

Aperitivo in the Dente quarter, the working-class area behind San Giorgio where locals gather on summer evenings. Final dinner with Hyblaean flavours: coniglio alla stimpirata, pasta with sardines, fried cassatelle.
