What to see in Catania in 2 days: complete itinerary
2-day itinerary in Catania: from lava-stone Baroque to the Pescheria, the Benedictine Monastery, underground quarters and Etna on the horizon.
What to see in Catania in 2 days
Catania is Europe's most volcanic city: built and rebuilt on Etna's lava, it transforms black stone into sumptuous Baroque, markets into theatre, and destruction into rebirth. Chaotic, authentic and generous, it is Sicily unfiltered. Two days are enough to fall for its indomitable energy.
Day 1: Baroque and markets
Morning (3-4 hours)
Start at Piazza del Duomo with the Liotru, the black lava elephant that is the city's symbol. The Cathedral of Sant'Agata (Vaccarini facade, 1736) unites Roman spolia columns with the most lavish Baroque. Inside, Sant'Agata's chapel holds Sicily's richest treasury after Palermo's.
Cross Porta Uzeda to reach the Pescheria, the open-air fish market that is the city's beating heart. Active every morning (except Sunday), it is a total sensory experience: voices, colours, smells. Arrive early (by 9) for the most authentic moment.
Climb Via Etnea, the monumental straight axis pointing toward the volcano. Each intersection frames snow-capped Etna. Stop at the Chiesa della Collegiata and the University Palace (loggia courtyard), reaching Villa Bellini, the public garden with Etna views.
Afternoon (3-4 hours)
Visit the Benedictine Monastery (now university), the second largest monastery in Europe. The great cloister, monumental kitchen and panoramic terraces are extraordinary. The guided tour (mandatory) lasts one hour and reveals details you wouldn't find alone.
Continue to Via Crociferi, the most scenic Baroque street: four churches in 200 metres, all with lava-stone and white limestone facades. On Saint Agatha's night (February), devotees pass here bearing candles.
Evening
Aperitivo in the lanes behind Teatro Massimo Bellini. Dinner in the old San Berillo quarter, Catania's nightlife zone with trattorias, street food (arancini, cartocciate) and venues open late.
Day 2: Underground Catania and Etna
Morning (3-4 hours)
Discover underground Catania: beneath the modern city lies one buried by eruptions. The Roman Theatre and Odeon (2nd century) emerge between 18th-century palaces on Via Vittorio Emanuele. The Terme dell'Indirizzo and Terme Achilliane (under Piazza Duomo) reveal the Roman city beneath the Baroque one.
Visit Castello Ursino, Frederick II's fortress (1239) that originally faced the sea — the 1669 lava flow pushed the coast back 500 metres. The Civic Museum inside has an often-overlooked medieval art and archaeology collection.
Afternoon (3-4 hours)
Devote the afternoon to Etna. From the centre, the AST bus reaches Rifugio Sapienza (1,900 m) in 90 minutes. From there you can walk the Silvestri Craters (easy, 30 minutes) for a first encounter with the lunar landscape. For the summit craters (3,340 m) you need a guide and cable car + jeep.
More intimate alternative: the north face (Linguaglossa/Piano Provenzana) is less crowded and passes through forests of Etna birches unique in the world.
Evening
Return to the city for a stroll on the Playa or the Ognina seafront, the volcanic harbour where locals swim among lava rocks. Final dinner with pasta alla Norma (the city's symbol) and granita with brioche.
Practical tips
- The Pescheria closes in the early afternoon and on Sundays: plan accordingly
- For Etna in summer, start early: clouds rise in the afternoon
- City centre parking is chaotic: use the Raffaello Sanzio car park (shuttle included)
- The metro connects the station to the Etna area
