How to get to Ragusa: flights, trains, cars and buses

How to get to Ragusa

Ragusa, a baroque jewel of the Val di Noto and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies in the hinterland of southeastern Sicily, perched on a hill between deep limestone gorges. Reaching it requires a little extra effort compared to Sicily's larger cities, but the reward is one of the island's most authentic urban experiences. Here is how to get there.

By plane

The nearest and most convenient airport is Comiso Pio La Torre (CIY), just 15 km from Ragusa. Ryanair operates flights from Rome Fiumicino, Milan Malpensa, and some seasonal destinations. The airport is small and fast: you are out in 10 minutes. The connection to Ragusa is by taxi (about 20-25 euros) or the AST shuttle service (about 30 minutes, few daily runs).

Catania Fontanarossa Airport (CTA), about 100 km away, offers many more domestic and international flights. From Catania, the direct Interbus/Etna Trasporti bus reaches Ragusa in about 2 hours. By car, the journey takes about 1 hour 30 minutes.

Local tip

If you find a flight to Comiso, take it without hesitation: the time savings compared to Catania are enormous. But always check taxi or shuttle availability: the airport is small and services can be limited. Book the taxi in advance.

By train

The railway network in southeastern Sicily is limited. Ragusa is connected to Syracuse by a scenic regional line (about 2 hours, with spectacular views of the Hyblean gorges) and to Catania via Gela and Caltagirone (about 4 hours, with a change). Trains are infrequent (3-4 services per day) and slow.

Ragusa station is in the modern part of the city (Ragusa Superiore), about 10 minutes' walk from the centre. To reach Ragusa Ibla, the baroque quarter, you need to walk down the stairway or take the shuttle bus (10 minutes).

Local tip

The Ragusa-Syracuse train is slow but offers incredible glimpses of the Hyblean countryside, carob trees, and gorges. Take it in at least one direction as a scenic experience, using the bus for the other.

By car

A car is the best way to reach and explore Ragusa and the Val di Noto. From Catania, take the SS194/SS514 to Ragusa in about 1 hour 30 minutes (100 km). From Syracuse, the SS115 crosses the heart of Sicilian baroque passing through Noto and Modica (about 1 hour 30 minutes, 90 km).

From Palermo, the fastest route is the A19 to Enna/Caltanissetta and then the SS626/SS514 towards Ragusa (about 3 hours 30 minutes, 260 km). From Agrigento, the SS115 follows the southern coast (about 2 hours 30 minutes, 155 km).

Parking

In Ragusa Superiore, parking is easy in the streets and free car parks. For Ragusa Ibla, the strategic car park is on Via Avvocato Giovanni Ottaviano (free, spacious), from which a short downhill walk leads to the heart of the baroque quarter. The Giardino Ibleo car park is another option. Avoid driving into Ibla: the streets are extremely narrow and parking is virtually impossible.

By bus

The bus is often the most practical means of reaching Ragusa from eastern Sicily. Interbus/Etna Trasporti connects Ragusa to Catania (about 2 hours, 5-6 daily services), Syracuse (about 1 hour 45 minutes), and Catania airport. AST connects Ragusa to Modica (30 minutes, frequent), Scicli (40 minutes), Noto (1 hour), and Comiso (20 minutes).

FlixBus offers long-distance connections from the mainland, with changes at Catania.

Ragusa's bus station is in Piazza Gramsci, in the upper part of the city (Ragusa Superiore).

Local transport

AST manages urban buses. The most important connection is the shuttle between Ragusa Superiore and Ragusa Ibla, which descends the switchbacks in about 10 minutes (ticket 1.10 euros). Frequency varies: more services during central hours, few in the evening.

Ragusa Ibla is explored exclusively on foot: it is small, largely pedestrianised, and walking among baroque palaces and staircases is the essence of the visit. The walk from Ragusa Superiore to Ibla down the 242-step stairway is spectacular and takes about 20 minutes downhill.

To visit the other pearls of the Val di Noto (Modica, Scicli, Noto), a car is virtually indispensable. Rental is available in Ragusa or at the airports.
