Where to stay in Portovenere: areas, accommodation and budget tips

Why choose Portovenere as your base

Portovenere is one of Liguria's most precious jewels, a UNESCO site alongside the Cinque Terre and the islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto. The village stretches along a rocky promontory at the western tip of the Gulf of Poets, with colourful medieval tower-houses descending to the church of San Pietro, perched on the cliff edge. Unlike the Cinque Terre, Portovenere is reachable by car, making it more convenient as a logistical base.

Lord Byron found inspiration here for his verses, and the village still radiates a literary, romantic charm that captivates every visitor. In the evening, when day-trippers leave, Portovenere reveals its most intimate soul.

Best areas to stay

Historic village (caruggi)

Portovenere's heart is a maze of caruggi (narrow alleys) climbing from the waterfront to the Doria castle on top. Lodgings are set in typical tower-houses: apartments with windows over the harbour, B&Bs with steep stairs and low ceilings but loaded with atmosphere. The position is perfect for living the village, though luggage requires some physical effort given the absence of vehicle-accessible roads.

Calata and waterfront

Along the Calata Doria, the village's sea-facing front, some of the most coveted properties sit: hotels and inns with direct views over the harbour and Palmaria island. Sunsets from here are unforgettable. Prices are the highest in the village, but the experience justifies them.

Le Grazie and Fezzano

The two hamlets north of Portovenere, overlooking the gulf, offer a quieter, more affordable alternative. Le Grazie has a small seaside square with fish restaurants, while Fezzano is a fishing village almost unknown to tourists. Prices here drop 30-40% compared to Portovenere's centre.

Hillside above the village

Climbing towards the Natural Park, some properties offer rooms and apartments with panoramic views over the gulf and islands. The position is secluded but the scenery is unmatched, especially at dawn.

Types of accommodation

B&Bs and guesthouses

The main offering in the historic village. Simple but characterful rooms, often with exposed stone details and small windows facing the sea. Hosts are usually long-time residents who know every secret of the place. High-season prices: 90-130 euros for a double.

Apartments and holiday homes

The most sought-after option, especially for couples and small groups. Tower-house apartments offer kitchens and independence, with the chance to buy fresh fish directly from the boat. In low season they start from 70-80 euros.

Hotels and inns

Portovenere has few hotels, all charming and compact. The most famous occupies a former convent with a cloister and sea-view terrace. Inns along the waterfront offer rooms with small balconies over the water.

Unique and special stays

Portovenere offers the chance to sleep in ancient Genoese watchtowers, with metre-thick stone walls and arrow slits that now frame sunset over the gulf. Some properties have private access to the rocks, where you can dive into the deep blue of Byron's Grotto. For a timeless experience, look for accommodation in the upper village, where silence is broken only by seagull cries and the sound of the sea.

Practical budget tips

  • Visit Portovenere between October and April: prices drop dramatically and the village is nearly deserted, bathed in extraordinary winter light
  • Stay in Le Grazie or Fezzano: 5 minutes by bus from the centre, prices are much lower
  • Take the boat to the Cinque Terre from Portovenere: a scenic trip that avoids the overcrowded trains
  • Wear comfortable shoes: the entire village is uphill and stairs are everywhere
  • Buy focaccia and stuffed anchovies from caruggio shops rather than sitting at waterfront restaurants
  • Book a boat trip to Palmaria island: beaches are accessible only by sea and less crowded than those on the mainland

When to book

High season runs from June to September, peaking in August. For this period, book at least 3-4 months ahead. May and October are excellent months: the weather is still good and prices reasonable. Winter offers the lowest prices but some properties close. The Festa della Madonna Bianca (August) draws thousands: book well ahead.

Getting around

Portovenere is reachable by car from the A12 (La Spezia exit) following the coastal road. Parking is paid and often full in summer: arrive early or take the bus from La Spezia. Boats connect Portovenere to the Cinque Terre and Palmaria island. Within the village, movement is exclusively on foot.
