What to see in Sorrento in 2 days: itinerary through the town, cliffs and hidden lemon groves
A 2-day Sorrento itinerary with walking routes through the old town, Marina Grande, the Valley of the Mills and panoramic coastal paths.
Why Sorrento deserves 2 days
Sorrento is much more than the gateway to the Amalfi Coast. Perched on a tufa cliff plunging into the gulf, it hides a medieval old town of narrow alleys, fragrant lemon groves and artisan heritage that resists tourist pressure. Two days let you discover both the iconic spots and the authentic corners day-trippers never see.
To complete your planning: where to stay in Sorrento, where to eat in Sorrento and how to get to Sorrento.
Day 1: Old town and Marina Grande
Morning — Piazza Tasso and the alleys
Start at Piazza Tasso, Sorrento's living room overlooking the deep gorge of the Vallone dei Mulini. Take Via San Cesareo, the beating heart of artisan shopping: wood inlay, hand-painted ceramics and artisanal limoncello. Stop at the Cathedral to admire the Romanesque bell tower with majolica tiles.
Hidden gem: the Sedil Dominova, a fifteenth-century loggia with frescoes — the only surviving noble seat in southern Italy, now a pensioners' social club.
Afternoon — Valley of the Mills and Marina Grande
From the viewpoint on Via Fuorimura, observe the Vallone dei Mulini: a vegetation-covered gorge with the remains of a 13th-century mill, inaccessible and surreal. Then descend to Marina Grande through the Greek Gate, the only surviving section of the ancient walls. The fishing village keeps a genuine atmosphere: colourful boats, drying nets, family-run trattorias.
Walking route: descend via Via Marina Grande (staircases), return by shuttle bus or up the steps of Via Parsano Vecchio (400 panoramic steps).
Evening — Walk and sunset
Via Marina Grande to the Baths of Queen Giovanna (half-hour walk from Marina Grande): a natural pool among Roman ruins of a 1st-century villa. Perfect sunset. Return for dinner at one of the terrace restaurants on Piazza della Vittoria.
Day 2: Lemon groves, trails and craftsmanship
Morning — Path of the Gods (first section) or lemon groves
Two options. For walkers: SITA bus to Colli di San Pietro, first section of the Path of the Gods to Santa Maria del Castello (2 hours, medium difficulty, breathtaking views). For a relaxed pace: visit a citrus grove with tasting (I Giardini di Cataldo or Giardino di Luca, by reservation).
Hidden gem: the Cloister of San Francesco, adjacent to Villa Comunale — intertwined Arab-Norman arches and a silent garden in the heart of the town.
Afternoon — Correale Museum and Villa Comunale
The Museo Correale di Terranova houses Capodimonte porcelain, Neapolitan school paintings and a park with citrus grove overlooking the gulf. Then stroll through the Villa Comunale: the viewpoint offers Sorrento's most photographed vista, with Vesuvius in the background.
Visit Alessandro Fiorentino's wood inlay workshop on Via San Nicola — the craftsman has used the same technique since 1885.
Evening — Village of Massa Lubrense
End your trip by reaching Massa Lubrense (15 minutes by bus): the church square has a view of Capri that takes your breath away. Dinner with fresh fish in one of the village trattorias.
