Complete guide to reaching Sorrento by train, ferry, car and bus. Connections from Naples, Rome and airports with updated times and costs.
How to get to Sorrento
Sorrento, overlooking the Bay of Naples with views of Vesuvius and Capri, is one of Campania's most beloved destinations. Reaching it is easy thanks to rail, sea and road connections linking it to Naples and the rest of Italy.
By train
The most practical way to reach Sorrento is the Circumvesuviana, the local railway departing from Napoli Garibaldi station (lower level of Napoli Centrale). The train crosses the entire Vesuvian coast with stops at Ercolano, Torre del Greco, Pompei, Castellammare di Stabia and Meta, arriving in Sorrento in about 1 hour and 10 minutes.
- Naples - Sorrento: about 1 hour 10 minutes, ticket 4.40 euros
- Frequency: one train every 20-30 minutes
- First train: around 6:00 AM, last train: around 10:30 PM
The Circumvesuviana is convenient but often crowded in summer. Try to leave early in the morning or avoid peak hours. The line is managed by EAV and does not accept Trenitalia tickets.
From Rome, take a Frecciarossa to Napoli Centrale (1 hour 10 minutes), then go down to the lower level for the Circumvesuviana. The total journey takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes.
By ferry and hydrofoil
Hydrofoils and ferries depart from Naples directly to Sorrento from Molo Beverello and the maritime station. The hydrofoil journey takes about 35-40 minutes and offers spectacular panoramic views.
- Hydrofoil Naples - Sorrento: about 35 minutes, from 15 euros
- Ferry Naples - Sorrento: about 1 hour, from 10 euros
- Companies: Alilauro, NLG, SNAV (seasonal)
In summer there are also direct connections from Capri, Ischia, Positano and Amalfi. Sorrento's port, Marina Piccola, is a short walk from the centre.
By plane
Sorrento does not have its own airport. The nearest airport is Naples-Capodichino, about 50 km away. From the airport you can reach Sorrento in several ways:
- Curreri Viaggi: direct bus airport-Sorrento, about 1 hour 15 minutes, 12 euros
- Alibus to Napoli Centrale + Circumvesuviana: about 2 hours total
- Private transfer: about 90-100 euros, most convenient with luggage
- Taxi: about 100-120 euros at fixed rate
By car
From Naples, take the A3 motorway towards Salerno and exit at Castellammare di Stabia, then follow signs for Sorrento along the SS145 (Strada Statale Sorrentina). The route is scenic but in summer traffic can be very heavy, especially between Vico Equense and Sorrento.
- From Naples: about 1 hour 15 minutes (55 km) without traffic
- From Rome: about 3 hours (270 km) via A1 + A3
- From Salerno: about 1 hour 30 minutes via the Amalfi Coast or 1 hour via motorway
Parking in Sorrento is limited and expensive. The main car parks are Parcheggio Lauro and Parcheggio De Curtis, with rates between 2 and 4 euros per hour. In peak season, consider leaving your car at Castellammare and continuing by train.
By bus
SITA Sud connects Sorrento with the Amalfi Coast (Positano, Amalfi, Ravello) with regular service along the famous panoramic road. From Naples, the Curreri bus offers a direct connection from the airport.
- Sorrento - Positano: about 40 minutes by SITA
- Sorrento - Amalfi: about 1 hour 30 minutes by SITA
- Single SITA ticket: from 2.40 euros
Getting around Sorrento and surroundings
Sorrento's centre is compact and easy to explore on foot. Corso Italia and Piazza Tasso are the heart of the town. To reach the beaches of Marina Grande and Marina Piccola you can walk or take local buses.
To explore the Sorrentine Peninsula, the orange local buses connect Sorrento to Sant'Agnello, Piano di Sorrento, Meta and Massa Lubrense. The ticket costs 1.50 euros.
Practical tips
- In summer, book hydrofoil tickets in advance as they sell out quickly
- The Circumvesuviana is affordable but watch out for pickpockets during rush hours
- If you rent a car, be aware that the Amalfi Coast has narrow roads with challenging hairpin turns
