Bolzano in 2 days: where Italy meets Tyrol

Bolzano is a unique city in Italy. Here medieval arcades smell of strudel, signs are bilingual, mountains loom from every angle and the alpine light makes everything crisper. Two days allow you to grasp its essence without rush.

Day 1: Historic centre and Ötzi

Morning

Start at the Portici (Lauben), the city's commercial heart since the Middle Ages. This 300-metre arcaded street is flanked by historic shops, South Tyrolean delicatessens and craft stores. Notice the architectural differences between the north side (German Gothic) and south side (Venetian-Italian).

Reach Piazza Walther, dominated by the statue of the medieval poet and the Gothic cathedral with its pierced bell tower and polychrome tile roof. The interior is surprisingly bare, in typical Gothic-Tyrolean style.

Afternoon

Devote at least two hours to the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology, home to Ötzi, the Iceman. The 5,300-year-old mummy and his equipment are displayed with exemplary museography. The journey reconstructing his daily life and violent death is compelling.

Hidden gem: after the museum, cross the bridge over the Talvera and walk along the Lungo Talvera promenade to Castel Roncolo (Runkelstein). This medieval castle, reachable in 20 minutes on foot, preserves the largest cycle of secular medieval frescoes: scenes of tournaments, hunts and courtly love.

Evening

Dine in a traditional Stube in the centre: canederli in broth, Schlutzkrapfen (stuffed half-moons) and Kaiserschmarrn. Via dei Bottai (Bindergasse) and Piazza delle Erbe offer authentic venues.

Day 2: Vineyards, cable car and walks

Morning

Take the Renon (Ritten) cable car from Via Renon: in 12 minutes you're on the plateau at 1,200 metres. Here you'll find the historic Renon narrow-gauge train connecting Soprabolzano to Collalbo through meadows and farmsteads. At Collalbo, the Earth Pyramids are spectacular geological formations worth the short detour.

The panorama from the plateau over the Dolomites (Catinaccio, Latemar, Sciliar) is among the finest in the Alps.

Afternoon

Back down, walk the Passeggiata di Santa Maddalena (Guntschnapromenade), a path through vineyards above the city offering views of the Catinaccio. Alternatively, the Passeggiata di Sant'Osvaldo crosses the Lagrein and Schiava vineyards that produce Bolzano's DOC wines.

Hidden gem: the Gries quarter, a formerly independent municipality absorbed into the city, retains its identity with the Benedictine Abbey of Muri and the Parish Church with an altarpiece by Michael Pacher. The pace here is still that of a country village.

Evening

Finish with dinner at the Batzenhäusl or one of the restaurants on Piazza delle Erbe, where evening aperitivo blends Italian and South Tyrolean culture in an irresistible mix.

Recommended walking routes

  • Complete historic centre: Portici → Piazza Walther → Cathedral → Via dei Bottai → Piazza delle Erbe → Ötzi Museum (1.5 km, 2 hours with visits)
