How to get to Cuneo: all the ways to reach the city at the foot of the Alps

Cuneo is an elegant city in southern Piedmont, set at the confluence of the Stura and Gesso rivers, at the foot of the Maritime Alps. Less affected by mass tourism, it offers privileged access to the alpine valleys and nearby France. Here is how to reach it.

Nearest airports to Cuneo

Cuneo Levaldigi Airport (CUF)

Cuneo has its own small airport, located at Levaldigi, about 20 km from the city centre. The airport offers direct flights to some national and international destinations, including Rome Fiumicino, Cagliari and Tirana (with operators such as Ryanair). Flight frequency is limited, so it is best to check availability. From the airport, shuttle buses connect the centre of Cuneo in about 30 minutes.

Turin Caselle Airport (TRN)

Located about 100 km away, this is the main regional airport with many more national and international flights. From Turin, you can reach Cuneo by train (about 1 hour 40 minutes) or by car (about 1 hour 30 minutes).

Nice Cote d'Azur Airport (NCE)

For those arriving from France or abroad, Nice is only 100 km from Cuneo via the Tenda Pass or tunnel. The connection is scenic but the mountain road requires care, especially in winter.

By train

Cuneo station is on the Turin-Cuneo-Ventimiglia-Nice railway line, one of the most scenic in Europe.

From Turin

Regional trains connect Torino Porta Nuova to Cuneo in about 1 hour 40 minutes, with departures every 1-2 hours. The route passes through the Piedmontese Langhe.

From Ventimiglia and Nice

The Cuneo-Ventimiglia-Nice line crosses spectacular viaducts and tunnels in the Maritime Alps. The journey from Ventimiglia takes about 2 hours and from Nice about 3 hours. Note: the line may be interrupted for works or winter weather.

From Milan and the rest of Italy

From Milan, you arrive in Turin by high-speed train (about 50 minutes) and from there continue to Cuneo. From Rome the total journey is about 5-6 hours.

By bus

Grandabus and Bus Company buses connect Cuneo with Turin and the provincial towns.

From Turin

Direct buses from Torino Lingotto to Cuneo in about 1 hour 30 minutes. Convenient especially on Sundays when trains are less frequent.

From the Cuneo valleys

Local buses connect Cuneo with the surrounding alpine valleys (Valle Stura, Valle Gesso, Valle Maira), essential for those who want to explore the mountain territory without a car.

By car

The car is the most convenient means of reaching Cuneo and exploring the province.

From Turin

Take the A6 Turin-Savona motorway to the Fossano exit, then continue on the SS231 to Cuneo. Alternatively, the provincial road through the Langhe is more scenic but slower. About 95 km in 1 hour 15 minutes.

From Genoa and Liguria

Take the A6 motorway to the Mondovi or Fossano exit, then the state road to Cuneo. About 160 km in 2 hours.

From France (Nice, Cote d'Azur)

Take the RD 6204 through the Tenda Pass or Tenda Tunnel (when open). The route is spectacular but subject to winter closures and works. Alternative: coastal motorway to Ventimiglia and then the SS20 to Cuneo. About 100 km from the border.

Parking

The centre of Cuneo has a large square (Piazza Galimberti) with fee-paying parking. Free parking is found in the outer areas. The centre is compact and walkable.

Transfers and taxis

From Cuneo Levaldigi airport, shuttles and taxis are available to the centre (about 25-35 euros). From Turin, private transfers can be booked (about 80-120 euros).

Practical tips
