Saint-Suliac, the Breton village the Rance keeps quiet

Saint-Suliac sits on a near-peninsula on the right bank of the Rance estuary in Ille-et-Vilaine, with almost 12 km of coastline for a village of just over 1,000 people. The name comes from a Welsh monk, Suliac, said to have founded a monastery on Mont-Garrot in the 6th century — an origin that gives the village roots well predating the Brittany we know today. The 13th-14th century church has a fortified tower and a rare parish enclosure for the region; it also lived through a tragic episode in 1597, when a fire killed around 250 people near the building.

Saint-Suliac's history also holds a lesser-known chapter: between 1758 and 1774, around 500 Acadian refugees, expelled from Canada in 1755, settled temporarily in the village. During the Second World War, American forces used the site to shell German fortifications during the liberation. Today people come to Saint-Suliac for the Dent de Gargantua standing stone, the Beauchet tidal mill, and above all to walk the coastal paths along the estuary, away from the crowds of Saint-Malo or Mont-Saint-Michel. The village has been part of the Plus Beaux Villages de France network since 1999.

How to get there

Saint-Suliac is about 10 km from Saint-Malo, which remains the reference point for trains (a TGV station with a direct link to Paris) and for international access via the ferry port. A regular bus line (line 12) connects the village to Saint-Malo. Cancale, known for its oysters, is about 20 km away. By car, the village is easily reached via the coastal road running alongside the Rance.
