Fort Bard: The Fortress That Stopped Napoleon and That Everyone Overlooks
The massive nineteenth-century fort that slowed Napoleon's advance stands above an almost-intact medieval village, together among the least-visited in the region.
In May 1800, Napoleon Bonaparte took two weeks to move his army past the walls of Fort Bard. The artillery pieces were wrapped in straw and slid at night over the cobblestones to muffle the noise. The fort did not fall: it was bypassed. Today that fortress — rebuilt on the same site between 1830 and 1838 by Carlo Alberto of Savoy — rises above the valley floor like a grey stone prow, and few tourists venture to explore the medieval village stretching at its feet.
The Fort Museum and Three Levels
Fort Bard now houses the Museum of the Alps, with multimedia exhibits on the history, geology, and anthropology of the Alpine chain, and the Museum of Mountain Emigration. The three fortified sections — Opera Napoleone, Opera Carlo Alberto, and Opera Mortai — are connected by panoramic elevators carved into the rock. Full admission with museums exceeds twelve euros, but the architectural structure is freely visible from outside and from the village.
The Medieval Village at the Fort's Feet
Bard is a village of fewer than a hundred residents where medieval houses crowd along a single main street. The tower-houses, the alleys covered by stone arches, and the Romanesque church of Santa Maria make this one of the best-preserved villages in the Aosta Valley, almost free of modern alterations. During certain times of the year, the fort's halls host international-level photography exhibitions.
Location and Practical Tips
Bard is about 60 kilometers from Aosta toward Ivrea, at the Pont-Saint-Martin highway exit. The village is also reachable by train: the Hône-Bard station is a few minutes' walk away. The best season runs from April to October; in winter the fort is open but with reduced hours. In the village, the historic inn serves Valdostan fonduta with cave-aged DOP fontina.
