Why visit Manarola in 2 days

Manarola is the most photogenic jewel of the Cinque Terre, a cluster of pastel-coloured houses clinging to cliffs above the Ligurian Sea. Yet beyond the postcard image lies a farming soul made of terraced vineyards, family wine cellars and trails where mass tourism does not reach. Two days are the perfect amount of time to discover every nuance without rushing.

Day 1: the village, the harbour and the vineyards

Morning - The heart of the village

Begin from Via Discovolo, the main street built over a covered stream bed. Walking uphill you will find the Church of San Lorenzo, a Gothic building from 1338 with a beautiful white marble rose window. In front of it opens a quiet little square where you can sit with a coffee before the village wakes up.

Continue towards the bell tower, separated from the church and a little-visited panoramic point. From here the view embraces the slate rooftops and the open sea. Then descend to the Marina, the tiny inlet where colourful boats are hauled up by hand on a concrete slipway. Arrive early: before 10 a.m. you will have the scene almost to yourselves.

Afternoon - Vineyards and Punta Bonfiglio

After lunch take the path climbing towards the terraced vineyards of Sciacchetra, the rare local dessert wine. The dry-stone walls create spectacular geometric patterns and the vines, cultivated almost vertically, are a living UNESCO heritage. Ask local producers for a tasting: the Cooperativa Cinque Terre cellar is accessible without booking.

Return via Punta Bonfiglio, the headland with the most panoramic bar in the village. The terrace in front of the cemetery offers the iconic sunset view of Manarola, with houses lit by the low sun reflecting in the water.

Evening

Dine in one of the trattorias along Via Discovolo. Order trofie al pesto and Monterosso anchovies, paired with a Cinque Terre white wine. After dinner stroll to the Marina: at night the house lights create a magical reflection on the water.

Day 2: panoramic trails and hidden gems

Morning - Manarola-Corniglia trail

Dedicate the morning to trail 506 (or SVA) connecting Manarola to Corniglia through the terraces. The route is of medium difficulty, about one and a half hours, and rewards with coastal views no road can offer. Bring water and light hiking shoes.

If the Via dell'Amore has reopened, walk at least the first stretch towards Riomaggiore: carved into the rock above the sea, it is one of the most romantic walks in Italy.

Afternoon - The luminous nativity and hidden gems

Back in Manarola, seek out the luminous nativity installations by Mario Andreoli on the hillside above the village. Even outside the Christmas period the metal structures are visible and the path reaching them offers an unusual vantage point from above.

Then descend towards the Nessun Dorma viewpoint, less known than the bar of the same name, reachable via a side path. Explore the secondary staircases of the old village: narrow alleys, curled-up cats, hanging laundry and painted doors tell the story of daily life far from the selfie crowds.

Evening

End with a Sciacchetra aperitivo at sunset. If the sea is calm, go down to the Marina for a last swim in the crystal-clear waters among the rocks.

• **Getting around:** the village is entirely pedestrian; regional trains from La Spezia every 15 minutes
