Supporting Local Economies: How Your Travel Choices Can Make a Real Difference

Every euro spent in a borgo is a vote for its survival. How to direct your travel choices to sustain the communities you visit.

When you spend money in a borgo, you're not just buying a coffee or a night in a B&B: you're helping to keep that bar and that B&B open. In a village of two hundred people, one extra customer a day can be the difference between survival and closure.

The economy of Italy's small centres is fragile. Depopulation has shrunk the customer base, large-scale retail has squeezed margins, public services have retreated. What remains — the bakery, the newsagent, the trattoria, the shepherd with his flock — lives in precarious balance. Conscious tourism can be the factor that sustains it.

The rule is simple: buy where you are. If the village has a grocery shop, buy your bread and cheese there. If it has a restaurant, eat there at least once. If it has an artisan, look at what they make and consider whether their work speaks to you. Not out of charity, but for value: local products are almost always better than mass-produced ones, and the price is often the same.

Agriturismi are a perfect example of a circular local economy. The owner grows, cooks, and hosts. The produce comes from the farm or from neighbours. The money stays in the area. One night in an agriturismo is worth, to the local economy, ten nights in a city hotel chain.

Paid local experiences are another lever. A shepherd who invites you to see the flock. A farmer who teaches you to make cheese. A local guide who tells the story of the borgo. These are activities that create direct income for people from the place, and offer the traveller something no tour operator can replicate.

Farmers' markets and direct sales are the most transparent way to support the local economy. You buy directly from the producer, with no intermediaries. The price is fair for both sides. And the product has a story that sets it apart from anything you'd find in a supermarket.

Donations count too. Many churches and monuments in borghi are maintained with visitors' offerings. A euro in the collection box helps pay for restoration, heating, cleaning. It's not an obligation, but it is a gesture of reciprocity.

What doesn't help: arriving with a packed lunch and a cool bag full of things bought elsewhere, consuming in the square without leaving a cent, photographing everything and driving away. It's all perfectly legal — but it's not solidarity. And in the long run, borghi that are only photographed and never supported end up closing.

Tourism can be extractive or generative. Extractive: it takes the beauty of a place and gives nothing back. Generative: it brings resources, relationships, attention. The difference lies in the everyday choices of the traveller, not in grand policies.

Every journey is an opportunity to do something good. Not a burden, not a moral obligation — a pleasure. Because the coffee at the village bar tastes better when you know that bar, thanks in part to you, will still be open next year.
