How to get to Aosta by train

Aosta is the terminus of the Chivasso-Aosta railway line (via Ivrea), operated by Trenitalia. Aosta station is in Piazza Manzetti, a short walk from the old town and the Arch of Augustus.

From Torino Porta Nuova the journey takes about 2 hours on direct regional trains (frequency every 1-2 hours). From Milano Centrale it takes about 3 hours with a change at Chivasso or Ivrea. From Rome the journey requires about 5-6 hours with a Frecciarossa to Turin and then a regional to Aosta.

Practical tips

• There is no high-speed service to Aosta: the train is scenic but slow, crossing the lower Valley with mountain views
• Direct Aosta trains leave from Torino Porta Susa without changes
• In winter trains may be delayed by snow: check Trenitalia alerts
• The station is small but has a bar and newsstand; the centre is 5 minutes' walk away

How to get to Aosta by car

Aosta has good motorway connections:

• **Milan Malpensa** (180 km): major international hub, then A4+A5 by car (2 hours 15 minutes) or Malpensa Express + regional via Turin
• **Geneva Cointrin** (150 km): excellent alternative from Switzerland/northern Europe, then through the Great St Bernard

From Turin Caselle the Savda shuttle to Aosta takes about 2 hours (limited services: book in advance).

Bus services are mainly operated by Savda, offering comprehensive connections:

• **Savda Turin-Aosta**: frequent services from Turin bus station (about 2 hours)
• **Savda Milan-Aosta**: direct connection (about 3 hours)
• **FlixBus**: connections from Rome, Milan, Turin and Genoa
• **Savda Courmayeur-Aosta**: frequent services along the valley (40 minutes)

Local transport in Aosta

Aosta's Roman old town is compact and perfectly walkable: from the Arch of Augustus to the Roman Theatre, from the Collegiate Church of Sant'Orso to the Cathedral, everything is just minutes apart. The urban service is operated by SVAP with lines connecting the outer districts (Porossan, Signayes, Arpuilles).

To reach mountain resorts (Pila, Cogne, Cervinia, Courmayeur) you need Savda buses or your own car. In winter the Aosta-Pila cable car departs from the city centre and reaches the ski slopes in 18 minutes.
