Menotre Waterfalls at Pale: The Bridal Veil in Hidden Umbria
Twenty kilometres from Foligno, the Menotre river plunges past ancient paper mills in a series of waterfalls scented with ferns and typographic history.

The first printed edition of the Divine Comedy was born in Foligno in 1472, and the paper Dante's words were pressed upon with Johann Numeister's movable type came from the mills of Pale. It is a detail that transforms a walk among the waterfalls into something more: a slender thread linking the waters of this mountain stream to the written culture of Europe.
The bridal veil
The Menotre river rises at around 800 metres, near Orsano, a hamlet of Sellano, and descends for about thirty kilometres before joining the Topino. At the level of Pale, a small hamlet in the municipality of Foligno, it meets a series of rocky drops that create three consecutive waterfalls. The most famous — and most photographed — is called the Bridal Veil: the water spreads across a surface of white limestone, disperses into a thousand rivulets, and falls back into an emerald pool with a rustle that drowns out every other sound. The effect is that of a wedding veil hung against the rock.
The trail and the mills
From the small car park at Pale, a loop trail of about two kilometres can be walked in an hour and a half at a leisurely pace. The path is free, open year-round, and practicable with non-slip footwear. Along the way you encounter the remains of ancient paper mills that until the nineteenth century supplied the printers of Foligno: rusted wheels, stone channels, walls covered in moss. The voice of the river accompanies the entire walk.
Nearby
A few minutes by car you will find the Hermitage of Santa Maria Giacobbe, carved into the rock in a natural niche on the cliff face: one of the most evocative rock-hewn structures in central Umbria, almost always deserted. Those wishing to combine nature and spirituality can stop here before or after the waterfalls.
When to go
The waterfalls are spectacular in spring, when the Menotre's flow is at its peak after the thaw. In summer the water diminishes but the coolness of the gorge remains. Avoid weekends in July and August: that is the only time the small car park at Pale fills up.
