Atrani: Italy's Smallest Town Clinging to the Amalfi Coast
Hidden in a cleft of the Costiera between Amalfi and Ravello, Italy's smallest municipality by area guards an almost-secret seaside square.
Atrani is technically a municipality — with a town hall, a parish priest, and a mayor — but it measures just 0.12 square kilometers. It is Italy's smallest municipality by area, wedged into a crevice of the Amalfi Coast between Amalfi (less than a kilometer on foot along the beach) and Ravello above. Those driving or taking the bus on the SS163 pass right by without noticing: the village is hidden in the gorge of the Dragone stream, visible only if you stop.
Piazza Umberto I and the Church of San Salvatore
Atrani's Piazza Umberto I is one of the Costiera's rarities: an open, bright space with café tables reaching all the way to the pebble beach. There is no SS163 traffic, no tourist buses parked nearby. The square is reachable only on foot (from Amalfi's beach, ten minutes) or from inside the village through a series of arches and underpasses. The church of San Salvatore de' Birecto, dating to the tenth century, preserves bronze doors reminiscent of those on Amalfi's cathedral.
The Alleys, the Stream, and the Silence
Atrani's center is a network of stairs, arches, and covered alleys climbing from the square along the gorge walls. The Dragone stream flows hidden under the houses. In some spots the alley is so narrow that two people cannot walk side by side. The humidity, the shade, the sound of water flowing beneath your feet create a unique atmosphere: more underground Naples than postcard Amalfi Coast. And yet here it is, five hundred meters from Amalfi.
How to Get There Without a Car
Atrani is reached by SITA bus from the Amalfi stop (three minutes) or on foot along the beach. It has no parking — it physically can't. The best months are April-May and September-October, when the Costiera is visitable without summer chaos. The town's restaurants are few but good: pasta with anchovies, scialatielli with seafood, delizia al limone. A full dinner costs twenty to thirty euros, less than half what you'd spend in Amalfi with the same view.
