Where to eat in Manarola: a guide to Cinque Terre flavours

Why eating in Manarola is a unique experience

Manarola is the smallest village in the Cinque Terre, yet its food scene rivals that of its larger neighbours. Meals here come with sea views framed by colourful tower-houses, plates of the freshest fish, and heroic wines grown on impossibly steep terraces above the cliffs. The cooking is Ligurian at its most authentic: simple ingredients, bold flavours, no frills.

Local specialities you must try

Pesto alla genovese reigns supreme. In Manarola you will find it made with a mortar and pestle using intensely fragrant basil, pine nuts, garlic, Parmigiano and Pecorino. Trofie al pesto is a non-negotiable order. Monterosso anchovies, salt-cured for centuries, arrive fresh and are served fried, marinated or stuffed.

Do not miss muscoli ripieni (mussels stuffed with breadcrumbs, parsley and garlic), focaccia di Recco with cheese, and chickpea farinata, crispy on the outside and soft within. For dessert, sciacchetrà biscuits and rice cake round things off beautifully.

Seafood dishes

The fritto misto di paranza is generous and light, prepared with the day's catch. Spaghetti allo scoglio smells of the Mediterranean, while Ligurian fish soup gathers the best of the local catch in a savoury tomato and herb broth.

Where to eat: best restaurants and trattorias

Trattoria dal Billy

Perched in the upper part of the village, it offers a jaw-dropping panoramic terrace. Creative seafood dishes, excellent raw fish starters and a wine list focused on local DOC labels. Booking is essential, especially in summer.

Nessun Dorma

More of an experience than a restaurant: boards of focaccia, Ligurian cured meats and cheeses paired with glasses of Cinque Terre DOC, all with the most photographed view in the village. Perfect for a sunset aperitivo or a light lunch.

Marina Piccola

Right on the marina, with tables almost at water level. Traditional fish cuisine, generous portions and honest prices for the area. The trofie al pesto and fritto misto are the house favourites.

Cappun Magru

An intimate spot in the heart of the village, named after the classic Ligurian lean dish of vegetables and fish. The menu changes with the season, sourcing is local and there is a good selection of natural wines.

Street food and quick bites

Manarola has several shops selling hot focaccia straight from the oven, fried-fish cones and slices of farinata. Along the main lane you will also find takeaway fryers serving cones of fried seafood at reasonable prices, ideal for a snack between hikes on the coastal trails.

Cinque Terre wines

The heroic vineyards of the Cinque Terre produce wines found nowhere else. Cinque Terre DOC white, from Bosco, Albarola and Vermentino grapes, is mineral and saline, a natural partner for fish. Sciacchetrà, a golden and precious passito, is the ultimate meditation wine: few bottles, high prices, but a single sip is worth it. The Cooperativa Agricoltura di Manarola makes some of the most representative labels.

Budget tips

  • Lunch on focaccia and farinata from a takeaway shop: you can spend under 10 euros.
  • Book lunch rather than dinner: many restaurants offer lighter, cheaper menus.
  • Avoid July and August, when prices rise everywhere.
  • Buy Sciacchetrà directly from the cooperative rather than at a restaurant.
  • Bring your own water: public fountains work well and save you the cover-charge mark-up.
