Discover what to see in Pesaro in 2 days: from Rossini's House to Roman mosaics, San Bartolo Park, Renaissance ceramics and the Liberty-style seafront.
What to see in Pesaro in 2 days
Pesaro is where music meets the sea, Roman mosaics coexist with Liberty architecture, and the San Bartolo hills plunge into the Adriatic. Italy's Capital of Culture 2024, it surprises with the density of art, nature and traditions packed into a compact space.
Day 1: The historic centre and Rossini's legacy
Morning (3-4 hours)
Start at Piazza del Popolo, the Renaissance heart of the city with the Ducal Fountain and the Della Rovere Ducal Palace (now Prefecture, courtyard open to visitors). The facade with its polychrome ceramic frieze is a unique masterpiece.
200 metres away you find Casa Rossini, where the composer was born in 1792. The museum tells the story of Pesaro's genius with original scores, memorabilia and period reconstructions. Continue to the Rossini Conservatory and Teatro Rossini (1818), a neoclassical jewel hosting the annual Rossini Opera Festival each August.
Visit the Cathedral with its extraordinary 6th-century early Christian floor mosaics, discovered by chance during restoration. Two superimposed layers of mosaics tell centuries of history.
Afternoon (3-4 hours)
Devote the afternoon to the Civic Museums at Palazzo Mosca. The highlight is Giovanni Bellini's Coronation of the Virgin altarpiece (1475), one of the most important works of the Italian Renaissance. The ceramics section is exceptional: Pesaro was one of the most important centres for Renaissance maiolica.
Continue to the Domus of Via dell'Abbondanza, a Roman archaeological area with intact floor mosaics rivalling those of Ravenna. Often deserted, it is a genuine discovery.
Evening
Stroll along the Nazario Sauro seafront, lined with early 20th-century Liberty-style villas. Arnaldo Pomodoro's iconic Grande Sfera on the roundabout is the city's symbol. Aperitivo at a beach bar with views of Monte Ardizio.
Day 2: San Bartolo Park and the coast
Morning (3-4 hours)
Devote the morning to the Monte San Bartolo Natural Park, the highest cliff face on the Adriatic, beginning just north of the city. By car or bicycle (rental on the seafront), follow the panoramic road climbing toward Fiorenzuola di Focara (8 km). This village mentioned by Dante in Canto XXVIII of the Inferno offers vertiginous coastal views.
Stop at Villa Imperiale, the Della Rovere summer residence with frescoes by Bronzino and Genga (guided tours Wednesday and Saturday). The Renaissance garden is a landscape architecture masterpiece.
Afternoon (3-4 hours)
Descend toward Baia Flaminia, a secluded beach at the foot of the cliff reached by a footpath. The water here is clearer than on the city beach.
Return to the centre to visit the Bicycle Museum, a tribute to the Marche cycling tradition, and the Centro Arti Visive Pescheria, a contemporary exhibition space in the former fish market, a 1936 rationalist building.
Evening
Dinner in the Porto quarter, the revitalised harbour area with seafood osterie where fishermen sell the day's catch. Final walk to the illuminated Pomodoro Sphere.
