What to see in Noto in 2 days

Why visit Noto in 2 days

Noto is the city of perfect Baroque: entirely rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake, it's an urban masterpiece where every palace, every church, every staircase seems designed to astound. The local limestone turns gold at sunset, transforming the Corso into a natural stage. But Noto isn't just architecture: a few kilometers away pristine beaches and the Vendicari reserve await, a birdwatching paradise. Two days let you experience both souls of this corner of Sicily.

Day 1: Baroque and the Old Town

Morning (9:00 - 13:00)

Enter the city through **Porta Reale** (a 19th-century triumphal arch) and walk the **Corso Vittorio Emanuele**, the main axis cutting the city in two. First stop is the **Church of Santa Chiara** (staircases, balcony with rooftop views, 20 minutes).

Continue to the **Cathedral of San Nicolo**: the two-towered facade dominates a monumental staircase. The interior, rebuilt after the dome collapsed in 1996, is luminous and solemn. Dedicate 30 minutes.

Opposite, **Palazzo Ducezio** (Town Hall) with its Hall of Mirrors is visitable (15 minutes). Then climb Via Corrado Nicolaci to **Palazzo Nicolaci di Villadorata**: the balconies with sculpted corbels (sirens, horses, putti, grotesque figures) are the symbol of Noto's Baroque. The street itself, uphill, is where the Infiorata takes place (May).

Afternoon (15:00 - 18:30)

Explore the **upper town**: the **Church of Montevergine** with its concave facade, **Palazzo Castelluccio** (restored with original furnishings, guided tour 45 minutes), and the San Domenico quarter with its convex-facade church.

Then descend to **Noto Antica** if you have transport (4 km): the ruins of the city destroyed in the 1693 earthquake lie on a hill wrapped in Mediterranean scrubland. The site is rarely visited and evocative (45 minutes).

Evening

Sunset aperitivo from a bar with Cathedral views (the stone turns orange). Dinner: pasta alla norma, swordfish alla ghiotta, cannolo with sheep ricotta. Via Rocco Pirri and side streets off the Corso have the best options.

Day 2: Sea, Nature and Surroundings

Morning (8:30 - 12:30)

Leave early for the **Vendicari Nature Reserve** (12 km from Noto): a protected coastal area with golden sand beaches, marshes where flamingos and herons nest, and abandoned tuna fisheries. The main trail (3 km, 1 hour) leads from Calamosche Beach (often cited among Italy's most beautiful) through the scrubland.

Bring a mask and snorkel: the sea is crystal clear and rocky seabeds teem with life. Stay until mid-morning to avoid strong sun.

Afternoon (14:30 - 17:30)

Return to Noto to visit the **Church of the Crocifisso** (upper part): richly decorated interior often ignored because it's off the Corso. Then, if sweets tempt you, seek out **Caffe Sicilia** (historic pastry workshop, granitas and gelatos with local ingredients).

Alternatively, reach **San Lorenzo Beach** or **Eloro Beach** (Greek-Roman archaeological site on the beach, free, very evocative).

Close with a stroll in Noto's **Public Garden** (at Porta Reale): palms, monumental ficus trees, and a relaxing view over the valley.

Evening

Last Sicilian evening: arancini, caponata, pasta with sardines, cassata. A glass of Nero d'Avola or Moscato di Noto accompanies sunset on the Cathedral steps.
