What to see in Naples in 2 days: complete itinerary with must-sees and hidden gems

Why visit Naples in 2 days

Naples is a city that overwhelms the senses: the scent of pizza wafting from wood-fired ovens on Via dei Tribunali, the creative chaos of narrow alleyways, the view of Vesuvius dominating every perspective. Two days are enough to fall in love, provided you have a well-planned itinerary alternating major landmarks with corners only locals know.

To plan your trip, check our guides on where to stay in Naples, where to eat in Naples and how to get to Naples.

Day 1: The ancient heart and Spaccanapoli

Morning — From the Cathedral to the Veiled Christ

Start at the Naples Cathedral, where the Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro holds extraordinary artistic heritage. Walk down Via dei Tribunali, stopping at the Church of San Lorenzo Maggiore to visit the underground archaeological excavations of the Greek-Roman market — a hidden treasure most tourists miss.

Continue to the Sansevero Chapel to admire Sanmartino's Veiled Christ. Arrive early: the queue grows rapidly after 10 AM.

Afternoon — Spaccanapoli and the popular quarters

Walk along Spaccanapoli from San Domenico Maggiore to Piazza del Gesù Nuovo. Detour to the lower Decumani to discover the majolica cloister of Santa Chiara. Hidden gem: the San Gregorio Armeno complex is not just the nativity scene street — the monastery has a cloister with a hanging garden of rare beauty.

Head down to the Forcella quarter for a caffè sospeso in one of the historic bars and cross Porta Nolana to the fish market.

Evening — Seafront and pizza

Stroll along Via Caracciolo to Castel dell'Ovo. The sunset from Borgo Marinari is unforgettable. Dinner with fried pizza at Di Matteo or classic pizza at Sorbillo — but also explore the lesser-known pizzerias on Via Foria.

Day 2: Vomero, art and Posillipo

Morning — Castel Sant'Elmo and the Charterhouse

Take the Centrale funicular up to Vomero. Castel Sant'Elmo offers the most complete panorama over the city and the gulf. Next door, the Certosa di San Martino is a baroque masterpiece with a historic nativity collection and the great cloister designed by Cosimo Fanzago.

Hidden gem: the Pedamentina, a historic staircase of 414 steps descending from the castle to the Spanish Quarters — a panoramic route used by locals as a shortcut.

Afternoon — MANN and Underground Naples

The National Archaeological Museum (MANN) is unmissable: the collection of Pompeian mosaics and frescoes is unrivalled worldwide. Allow at least two hours. Then descend into Underground Naples from Piazza San Gaetano to explore aqueducts and tunnels 40 metres below ground.

Evening — Posillipo at sunset

End your trip at Parco Virgiliano in Posillipo: views of Capri, Ischia and Procida. Dinner in the village of Marechiaro, where a small window with a sea view inspired the famous Neapolitan song. To get there, take bus C21 from Mergellina.

Practical tips for the walking route

  • Day 1: approximately 8 km, entirely flat in the historic centre
  • Day 2: approximately 6 km plus funicular and bus to Posillipo
  • Comfortable shoes essential on the cobblestones
  • The Campania Artecard 2-day pass covers transport and main museum entries
  • Avoid August: the heat in narrow alleys is stifling
