What to see in L'Aquila in 2 days: complete itinerary
Guide on what to see in L'Aquila in 2 days: from the Basilica of Collemaggio to the Spanish Fort, post-earthquake rebirth, Romanesque churches and Gran Sasso.
What to see in L'Aquila in 2 days
L'Aquila is a city in rebirth: the 2009 earthquake wounded it deeply, but reconstruction is returning an extraordinary artistic heritage. Founded in 1254 by Frederick II as a union of 99 castles, it holds unique Romanesque churches, an imposing fortress and proximity to Gran Sasso. Visiting today means witnessing a miracle of resilience.
Day 1: The historic centre and rebirth
Morning (3-4 hours)
Start at the Basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio, the freshly restored Romanesque-Gothic masterpiece that is the symbol of L'Aquila's renaissance. The two-tone facade in white and pink stone is unique in Italy. Inside, the nave recovered after the transept collapse is moving. Here Celestine V was crowned pope in 1294 and here he rests in Girolamo da Vicenza's mausoleum.
Continue toward the centre along Corso Vittorio Emanuele to Piazza del Duomo, the city's geometric heart. The square, still partly a building site, shows reconstruction in progress. The daily market under the arcades is a centuries-old tradition that never stopped.
Visit the Church of San Bernardino (1472), with the monumental Renaissance facade by Cola dell'Amatrice and Baroque interior housing the mausoleum of Saint Bernardino of Siena, who died here in 1444.
Afternoon (3-4 hours)
Devote the afternoon to the Spanish Fort (16th-century Castle), the mighty square-plan fortress built by the Spanish after 1534. It houses the National Museum of Abruzzo with the Mammoth (complete Elephas meridionalis skeleton found in the 1950s) and works from the Middle Ages to the Baroque. The moat and bastions are a public park with city views.
Explore the Quattro Cantoni, the historic crossroads dividing the city quarters corresponding to the founding castles. Each quarter had its fountain: the Fountain of 99 Spouts (1272) is the most emblematic monument, with 99 grotesque masks pouring water into a long basin.
Evening
L'Aquila surprises in the evening: the student nightlife (major university seat) animates venues between Piazza del Duomo and Via Garibaldi. Dinner with arrosticini, maccheroni alla chitarra and L'Aquila DOP saffron.
Day 2: Surroundings and Gran Sasso
Morning (3-4 hours)
Visit the Church of Santa Maria ad Cryptas in Fossa (10 km), a small 13th-century church with a complete medieval fresco cycle that makes it the "Sistine Chapel of Abruzzo" — a hidden jewel virtually unknown.
Continue to Santo Stefano di Sessanio (25 km), the medieval village restored with post-earthquake funds, perched at 1,250 m overlooking the Navelli Plain. Stroll among white stone houses and the Medici tower (rebuilt after 2009).
Afternoon (3-4 hours)
Devote the afternoon to Campo Imperatore, the plateau at 1,800 m reachable by cable car from Fonte Cerreto (20 minutes from L'Aquila). Called the "Little Tibet" for its boundless spaces, it offers easy walks with Alpine panoramas. The Hotel Campo Imperatore where Mussolini was imprisoned in 1943 is a piece of history.
For the more athletic, the trail to Rifugio Duca degli Abruzzi (2,388 m, 2 hours) opens the door to Corno Grande (2,912 m, the Apennines' highest peak).
Evening
Return to L'Aquila for an evening stroll along the Corso, where the rebuilt city shows its most vital face. Final dinner in the Santa Giusta quarter with traditional trattorias that reopened after the earthquake.
