What to see in Cagliari in 2 days: itinerary through Castello, salt flats and urban beaches
A 2-day Cagliari itinerary: from the historic Castello quarter to Poetto beach, through the flamingo salt flats and the authentic Marina markets.
Why Cagliari deserves 2 days
Capital of Sardinia and often ignored by tourists racing to the Costa Smeralda beaches, Cagliari is a surprising Mediterranean city: a natural amphitheatre overlooking the gulf, with layered historic quarters, pink flamingos in urban lagoons and an 8 km beach reachable by bus. Two days reveal a soul few people know.
Complete your planning: where to stay in Cagliari, where to eat in Cagliari and how to get to Cagliari.
Day 1: The four historic quarters
Morning — Castello and the Pisan towers
Start in the Castello quarter, the medieval citadel perched on the hill. Enter through Porta Cristina and climb the Torre di San Pancrazio (1305) for the finest panorama over the city and gulf. Visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria with its underground crypt rich in relics.
Hidden gem: the Ghetto degli Ebrei, a very narrow alley between medieval houses in Castello — now home to small contemporary art galleries.
Afternoon — Stampace and the Marina
Descend into the Stampace quarter for the Church of Sant'Efisio (starting point of the longest procession in the Mediterranean, 1 May) and the Roman Amphitheatre carved into limestone rock. Then cross Via Roma to the Marina quarter: the Mercato di San Benedetto is Italy's largest covered market — fish stalls, Sardinian cheeses and bottarga perfuming the air.
Walking route: Castello → staircases to Stampace → Amphitheatre → Botanical Garden (6 hectares, subtropical plants) → Marina.
Evening — Bastion and aperitivo
Aperitivo at the Bastion of Saint Remy: the Umberto I terrace is Cagliari's open-air living room with 360-degree views. For dinner, a trattoria in the Villanova quarter — culurgiones, fregola with clams, porceddu.
Day 2: Urban nature and Poetto
Morning — Salt flats and flamingos
The Molentargius Park salt flats are reachable by bicycle from the centre (3 km). A stable colony of pink flamingos lives here year-round — a surreal sight steps from the city. Flat cycling path suitable for everyone.
Hidden gem: the dividing canal between the freshwater and saltwater pools hosts herons, black-winged stilts and kingfishers — bring binoculars.
Afternoon — Poetto beach and Sella del Diavolo
Poetto is Cagliari's urban beach: 8 km of white sand with crystal-clear water. From the first stop, a 40-minute trail (medium-easy) climbs to Sella del Diavolo, the headland closing the gulf to the south. At the top: remains of a WWII fort and a view embracing the entire coastline to Villasimius.
For the return, descend toward Cala Fighera, a hidden cove accessible only on foot.
Evening — Villanova and music
Villanova is the liveliest quarter in the evening: small streets with murals, live music venues and restaurants with courtyards. Try seadas with bitter honey for dessert — the signature sweet of Sardinia.
Practical tips
