How to get to Viterbo: train, car, plane and bus
Complete guide to reaching Viterbo by train, car, plane and bus. Porta Romana station, Rome-Viterbo railway, Cassia bis dual carriageway and local transport in Tuscia.
How to get to Viterbo
Viterbo, the City of the Popes, is the heart of Lazio's Tuscia region, a land of medieval villages, natural hot springs and Lake Bolsena. An hour from Rome yet far from mass tourism, Viterbo is easily reached by car and train, offering an authentic immersion into central Italy.
By train
Viterbo has two main stations. **Viterbo Porta Romana** is the Trenitalia station on the **Rome-Viterbo line** (via Orte). From **Rome Tiburtina**, regional trains take about 2 hours with a change at Orte, while direct trains (when available) take about 1 hour 50 minutes. From **Orte** the regional takes about 25 minutes.
**Viterbo Porta Fiorentina** is the station for the **Roma Nord railway** (run by ATAC/Cotral), connecting Viterbo with Rome (terminus **Piazzale Flaminio/Viterbo**). The journey takes about 2 hours but frequency is good during rush hours. This station is closer to the old town.
From **Florence** you arrive in about 3 hours with a change at Orte (Frecciarossa to Orte, then regional).
Local tip
The Roma Nord railway is more convenient if departing from central Rome (metro line A stop at Flaminio). The Trenitalia line via Orte is preferable if arriving from the north. Both stations are a 10-minute walk from the centre.
By car
From **Rome**, take the **Cassia bis dual carriageway** (toll-free, about 80 km in 70 minutes) or the **A1** to Orte then the **SS204** (about 90 minutes but faster). From **Florence**, take the A1 to Orte then the SS204, about 230 km in 2 hours 30 minutes.
From **Siena** the most scenic route passes through Bolsena and the lake, about 170 km in 2 hours. From **Perugia** the E45 to Orte then Viterbo, about 130 km in 90 minutes.
Parking
The medieval old town is partly a ZTL. **Parcheggio Sacrario** (free, large, 5 minutes from the walls) is the most convenient. The **Piazza della Rocca car park** is paid but very central (about 1 euro/hour). The **Porta Romana station car park** is free. Streets inside the walls are narrow: avoid driving in.
By plane
Viterbo has no commercial airport. **Rome Fiumicino Airport** (FCO) is about 120 km away, reachable in about 90 minutes by car. From Fiumicino, take the Leonardo Express to Rome Termini (30 minutes) then the train to Viterbo.
**Rome Ciampino Airport** (CIA) is about 110 km away. The shuttle bus from Ciampino reaches Rome Termini in about 40 minutes.
**Perugia San Francesco Airport** (PEG) is about 120 km away and is an alternative for Ryanair arrivals.
Local tip
From Fiumicino, if you hire a car, take the A1 motorway northbound and exit at Orte: it is the fastest route to Viterbo, avoiding Roman traffic.
By bus
**Cotral** buses connect Viterbo with Rome (terminus **Saxa Rubra**, reachable by the Roma Nord railway) in about 2 hours, with frequent services. Direct buses also depart from Saxa Rubra.
**Cotral** buses also cover connections with Tuscia towns: Bolsena, Montefiascone, Bagnoregio (for Civita), Tarquinia, Tuscania. The **bus station** is in Piazzale Gramsci, next to Porta Romana station.
**FlixBus** connects Viterbo with Rome, Florence, Milan and other cities.
Local transport
Viterbo's old town is enclosed within medieval walls and is entirely walkable: from the San Pellegrino quarter (one of the finest of its kind in Italy) to Piazza del Plebiscito is 10 minutes, to the Papal Palace 15.
**Francigena** urban buses cover the city and its hamlets, including the **Terme dei Papi** (Bullicame), also reachable by bus in about 15 minutes.
For **Lake Bolsena**, the Cotral bus takes about 40 minutes. For **Civita di Bagnoregio**, the Cotral bus reaches Bagnoregio in about 40 minutes, from where you continue on foot.
