How to get to Tivoli: all the ways to reach the city of villas

Tivoli lies just 30 km from Rome, in the Tiburtine Hills of Lazio. Famous for Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa, it is an easily reachable destination from the capital by several means of transport. Here is how to get there.

Nearest airports to Tivoli

Tivoli is served by Rome's airports, both well connected.

Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO)

The main Roman airport, about 60 km from Tivoli. From Fiumicino, you can reach Roma Termini on the Leonardo Express (32 minutes) or Roma Tiburtina on the FL1 train. From both stations, you continue to Tivoli.

Rome Ciampino Airport (CIA)

Closer to Tivoli (about 35 km), this is the airport preferred by low-cost airlines. From the airport, a shuttle bus takes you to Anagnina metro station, from where you continue to Tivoli by Cotral bus.

By train from Rome

The train is one of the most convenient ways to reach Tivoli from Rome.

From Roma Tiburtina

Regional trains on the FL2 line (Rome-Pescara) stop at Tivoli. The journey takes about 50-60 minutes with departures every 30-60 minutes. Tivoli station is in the lower part of the town, about 15 minutes on foot from the historic centre and Villa d'Este.

From Roma Termini

From Termini, you can take a train to Roma Tiburtina (a few minutes) and from there continue on the FL2 to Tivoli. Alternatively, some regional trains depart directly from Termini.

From Tivoli station to the centre

From the railway station to the historic centre and Villa d'Este, it is about a 15-minute uphill walk. Alternatively, CAT urban buses connect the station to the centre.

By Cotral bus

Cotral buses are a convenient and frequent alternative to the train.

From Roma Ponte Mammolo

From Ponte Mammolo metro B station, Cotral buses depart directly for Tivoli. The journey takes about 50-60 minutes (longer during rush hour). Frequency is high, with departures every 15-20 minutes during peak hours. The bus stops in Piazza Garibaldi, in the heart of the historic centre, very convenient for Villa d'Este.

Advantages of the bus

The bus arrives directly in the centre of Tivoli, unlike the train which stops in the lower part. For visiting Villa d'Este, the bus is the best choice.

By car

Tivoli is easily reachable by car from Rome and the rest of Italy.

From Rome

Take the Via Tiburtina (SS5) for about 30 km, or take the A24 Roma-L'Aquila motorway and exit at Tivoli. The motorway is faster (about 30 minutes without traffic) but has a toll.

From northern and southern Italy

From the A1 motorway (Milan-Naples), take the Rome ring road (raccordo anulare) and then the A24 towards L'Aquila, exiting at Tivoli.

Parking

The historic centre of Tivoli has restricted traffic zones. Fee-paying car parks are found near Largo Garibaldi and in the lower area near the station. For Hadrian's Villa (5 km from the centre), parking is easier.

Transfers and taxis

From Rome or the Roman airports, you can book private transfers to Tivoli. The cost from central Rome is about 50-70 euros. From Fiumicino about 80-120 euros. Urban taxis in Tivoli connect the station to the centre and to Hadrian's Villa.

Hadrian's Villa: how to get there

Hadrian's Villa is about 5 km from the centre of Tivoli, on the plain below. You can reach it by CAT urban bus number 4 from the railway station or the centre, or by car (convenient parking). On foot from the centre, it takes about 40 minutes.

Practical tips

  • For Villa d'Este: take the Cotral bus from Ponte Mammolo, you arrive directly in the centre
  • For Hadrian's Villa: the car or CAT bus 4 from the station are the best options
  • Avoid Via Tiburtina during rush hour: traffic is heavy
  • The Metrebus Lazio ticket covers metro, Cotral bus and regional train
  • In summer, bring water and a hat: the climbs in Tivoli under the sun are demanding
  • Combine a visit to Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa in the same day
