How to get to Spello: complete transport guide

How to get to Spello

Spello, one of Umbria's most charming villages, sits on the slopes of Monte Subasio in the Umbrian Valley, between Foligno and Assisi. Thanks to its position along the main Foligno-Perugia railway line, it is one of the easiest Umbrian villages to reach by public transport.

By air: nearest airports

The closest airport is **Perugia San Francesco d'Assisi (PEG)**, about 30 km from Spello. It has a limited number of flights, mainly with Ryanair to selected Italian and European destinations.

For a wider choice, the two **Rome** airports are the main alternative: **Fiumicino (FCO)** is about 180 km away and **Ciampino (CIA)** about 170 km. From Rome, Spello is conveniently reached by train in about 2 hours.

**Florence (FLR)** and **Pisa (PSA)** airports are other options, respectively about 190 and 280 km away, but connections to Umbria require more changes.

By train: the best option

Spello has a **railway station** served by the Trenitalia regional line Foligno-Perugia-Terontola, making the train the most practical means of transport.

  • **From Rome Termini**: fast regional train to Foligno (about 1 hour and 45 minutes), then change for Spello (8 minutes). Or direct regional train Rome-Perugia stopping at Spello, about 2 hours and 15 minutes
  • **From Perugia**: direct regional train, about 25-30 minutes. Good frequency, roughly one train per hour
  • **From Foligno**: just 8 minutes by regional train, with frequent services throughout the day
  • **From Florence**: train to Foligno or Perugia with a change, about 2 and a half hours
  • **From Assisi**: direct regional train, just 10 minutes

Spello station is at the foot of the village, about 10 minutes on foot from Porta Consolare and the start of the main street.

By car: routes and parking

  • **Porta Consolare car park**: paid, closest to the centre, limited spaces
  • **Sports field car park**: free, about 5 minutes on foot from the centre
  • **Car parks along the walls**: various areas along the Roman walls

During the Infiorate festival (June) and on spring weekends, car parks fill up quickly.

By bus

  • **Flixbus**: stops at Foligno, from where you continue by train (8 minutes) or local bus

The bus stop is near the railway station.

From Rome: the most frequent connection

Rome is the main gateway for those arriving from outside the region. Options:

  • **Fast regional train**: Roma Termini - Foligno, then change for Spello. Affordable and frequent
  • **Car**: A1 + E45, about 2 hours. Convenient for exploring the entire Umbrian Valley
  • **Bus + train**: Flixbus to Foligno, then regional to Spello

Practical tips

  • **Train**: the best choice. Spello is on the main line and the station is very close to the centre
  • **Car**: useful for also visiting Bevagna, Montefalco, Trevi and Spoleto on the same trip
  • **Infiorate**: during the festival (late May-June) book parking and accommodation well in advance
  • **In the village**: the centre is walkable in a couple of hours. Streets are uphill with ancient paving: comfortable shoes essential
  • **Cycling**: the Umbrian Valley cycle path passes at the foot of Spello and connects Assisi and Foligno
