How to get to Livorno: all the ways to reach the Tuscan port city

Livorno is one of the main cities on the Tuscan coast, a major commercial and passenger port and a tourist destination full of surprises. Well connected with Pisa and Florence, it is easily reachable from across Italy. Here is how to get there.

Nearest airports to Livorno

Pisa Galileo Galilei Airport (PSA)

This is the nearest airport, just 20 km from Livorno. Well connected with national and international flights (Ryanair, easyJet, Vueling and flag carriers). From the airport, you can reach Pisa Centrale by the PisaMover (5 minutes), then continue to Livorno by train (15-20 minutes) or bus.

Florence Peretola Airport (FLR)

About 100 km away, with national and international flights. From Firenze Santa Maria Novella you can reach Livorno by train in about 1 hour 30 minutes.

Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport (BLQ)

About 180 km away, an alternative with many flights. From Bologna Centrale the train to Livorno takes about 2 hours 30 minutes.

By train

Livorno has a well-connected railway station on the Tyrrhenian line.

Livorno Centrale

The main station is just a few minutes from the centre and the seafront.

From Pisa

Very frequent regional trains connect Pisa Centrale to Livorno Centrale in just 15-20 minutes. Departures every 10-15 minutes during peak hours. This is the fastest and most convenient connection.

From Florence

Direct regional trains from Firenze Santa Maria Novella to Livorno in about 1 hour 20 minutes. Frequency every 30-60 minutes. Some trains require a change at Pisa.

From Rome

From Roma Termini you can reach Livorno by train in about 2 hours 30 minutes by direct InterCity or regional trains with a change at Pisa or Campiglia Marittima. High-speed trains reach Florence in 1 hour 30 minutes, then continue on the regional.

From Genoa and the north

InterCity and regional trains connect Genoa to Livorno along the Tyrrhenian line in about 2 hours 30 minutes.

By ferry

The port of Livorno is one of the most important in the Mediterranean, with connections to the islands and to Sardinia, Corsica and Sicily.

To Sardinia

Grimaldi Lines and Moby operate ferries to Olbia (about 8 hours) and other Sardinian destinations. Overnight ferries are ideal for saving a night's accommodation.

To Corsica

Corsica Ferries connects Livorno to Bastia (about 4 hours) and Ile Rousse. A convenient connection for reaching Corsica from Italy.

To the Island of Elba

From Piombino (about 80 km south of Livorno), ferries depart for Portoferraio on the Island of Elba. From Livorno, you can reach Piombino by train or car.

To Sicily

By car

From Florence

From Genoa and the north

A12 motorway (Genoa-Livorno) along the Ligurian and Tuscan coast. About 220 km in 2 hours 30 minutes.

Parking

Livorno has several fee-paying car parks near the centre and the port. The Fortezza Nuova car park is the most convenient for the centre. Near the port there are large car parks for those boarding ferries.

By bus

CTT Nord buses connect Livorno with Pisa, the coastal towns and the Tuscan hinterland. The LAM Blu line runs frequently between Livorno and Pisa. FlixBus connects Livorno with major Italian cities.

Transfers and taxis

From Pisa airport, private transfers to Livorno are available (about 40-60 euros). The local taxi service operates from the station and the city centre.

  • The FI-PI-LI is toll-free but often busy during rush hours
