How to get to Erice: complete transport guide
How to reach Erice in western Sicily: Trapani airport, cable car from Trapani, driving routes and AST bus. Practical directions from Palermo and Trapani.
How to get to Erice
Erice, the medieval hilltop village perched at 751 metres on Monte San Giuliano in western Sicily, commands the Trapani coastline with panoramic views reaching the Egadi Islands. Its mountaintop position makes the final approach spectacular but requires some planning. Here is how to get there.
By air: nearest airports
The nearest airport is **Trapani-Birgi Vincenzo Florio (TPS)**, just 15 km from the cable car base for Erice. It serves domestic flights and some European routes, mainly low-cost with Ryanair.
**Palermo Falcone-Borsellino (PMO)** is about 100 km away and an alternative with many more flights. From Palermo you can reach Trapani by car in about 1 hour and 15 minutes, or by bus.
The cable car: the most spectacular way
The **Erice cable car** (Funivia Trapani-Erice) is the most thrilling way to reach the village. It departs from the lower station on **Via Capua in Trapani** and climbs to Erice in about **10 minutes**, offering breathtaking views over the coast, the salt pans and the Egadi Islands.
- Operates year-round with variable timetables (more frequent in summer)
- Departures roughly every 20-30 minutes
- Closed in strong winds (not uncommon at this altitude)
- Return ticket purchasable at the station
From Trapani centre the cable car station can be reached by ATM urban bus or taxi.
By train: reaching Trapani
Erice does not have a railway station. You arrive by train at **Trapani** and then continue by cable car or bus.
- **From Palermo Centrale**: Trenitalia regional train, about 2 hours and 15 minutes, with possible changes at Alcamo. Frequency of 4-5 trains per day
- **From Marsala**: regional train, about 30 minutes

From Trapani station the cable car is about 3 km away, reachable by urban bus or taxi.

Practical tips
- **Cable car always first choice**: avoids traffic, parking and offers unmatched views. Check it is running (closes in strong wind)
- **Wind and fog**: Erice is at 750 metres and the weather can change quickly. Bring a jacket even in summer
- **Cable car timetables**: check the official website before departing, especially in low season
- **In the village**: the centre can be explored on foot in 2-3 hours. The streets are stone-paved and often slippery
- **Combine with the salt pans**: the view from the cable car over the Trapani salt pans is a unique sight. Visit the salt pans before or after Erice
