How to get to Chioggia: complete transport guide

How to get to Chioggia by train

Chioggia does not have a railway station in the old town. The nearest station is Chioggia (on the Adria-Chioggia line), located in the Sottomarina area, about 1.5 km from the historic centre. From Padova you can reach Chioggia in about 1 hour changing at Adria. From Venezia Santa Lucia there is no direct rail connection.

The most practical alternative from Venice is the ACTV bus (line 25) from Piazzale Roma, which arrives directly in central Chioggia in about 1 hour.

Practical tips

  • The Adria-Chioggia line has few daily services: plan carefully
  • From Padova, intercity buses are often faster and more frequent than the train
  • Chioggia station is connected to the old town by local buses or 15 minutes' walk across the Translagunare Bridge

How to get to Chioggia by car

Chioggia is easily reached by car:

  • From Padova: SS16 Adriatica or eastern ring road to Piove di Sacco, then SP6 (about 45 minutes, 50 km)
  • From Venice: Romea SS309 southbound or A4+Mestre ring road+SS309 (about 50 minutes)
  • From Bologna: A13 to Padova, then SS16 to Chioggia (about 1 hour 45 minutes)
  • From Milan: A4 to Padova Est, then towards Chioggia (about 3 hours)

You enter Chioggia via the Translagunare Bridge (long bridge over the lagoon) leading directly to the Isola dell'Unione car park.

Parking

  • Isola dell'Unione car park (former Zucchero): large, paid, immediately after the access bridge. The most convenient for the old town (5 minutes' walk from Corso del Popolo)
  • Free parking in the Sottomarina area along Lungomare Adriatico (blue lines in summer)
  • Val da Rio car park: free, but further from the centre
  • The old town is a ZTL: you cannot drive in. Parking is mandatory on the outskirts

How to get to Chioggia by plane

The nearest airports to Chioggia are:

  • **Venice Marco Polo** (50 km): the most convenient. From the airport take the ATVO bus to Piazzale Roma (20 minutes), then ACTV bus line 25 to Chioggia (1 hour). Or rent a car
  • **Treviso Canova** (70 km): low-cost alternative. Shuttle to Venice Mestre, then bus to Chioggia
  • **Bologna Marconi** (130 km): by car via A13 in about 1 hour 45 minutes

Car rental from Venice airport is the most flexible solution to also explore the southern lagoon and coastline.

How to get to Chioggia by bus and water bus

Buses are the main public transport to reach Chioggia:

  • **ACTV line 25**: Venice Piazzale Roma - Chioggia (1 hour, frequent services)
  • **Busitalia Padova-Chioggia**: intercity lines from Padova (about 1 hour)
  • **ACTV water bus line 11**: Pellestrina-Chioggia (ferry, 10 minutes). You reach Pellestrina from Venice Lido by line 11 (bus+ferry), a scenic route across the lagoon

The Chioggia bus terminal (Piazzale Santa Maria) is at the start of Corso del Popolo, the heart of the town.

Local transport in Chioggia

Chioggia's old town is a long narrow island (about 1 km) entirely walkable along Corso del Popolo, the main street. No transport is needed: from the access bridge to the southern tip (Chiesa di San Domenico) it is a 15-minute stroll past alleys, canals and the fish market.

To reach Sottomarina (the beach) you cross the Translagunare Bridge on foot (10 minutes) or by local bus. For lagoon excursions (salt marshes, fishing huts, Pellestrina island) boats depart from Chioggia's canal port. In summer a bicycle service is available connecting the centre and the beach.
